The narrative of Chatham University starts on a chilly winter day: December 11, 1869. On this majestic day, Reverend William Trimble Beatty – a man whose impressive lineage includes the distinguished opera contralto Louise Homer, set the foundation for what was then known as Pennsylvania Female College. It's enchanting home was nestled in the Berry mansion, a stately abode on Woodland Road in Shadyside. The Shadyside Campus to this day, encapsulates a beautiful mosaic of former private mansions, each with its rich, intriguing story.
Fast forward to two decades later, in 1890: the academic institution embraced a fresh identity – the Pennsylvania College for Women. Come 1955, another transformation took place, the institution was christened Chatham College. This shift was in the honor of William Pitt, the 1st Earl of Chatham, who is also the namesake of the bustling city of Pittsburgh.
Then it occurred, a significant milestone in 2007, that propelled the institution's stature immensely. The prestigious Pennsylvania Department of Education, on April 23rd bestowed upon Chatham the revered status of a university. Abuzz with the excitement of this recognition, Chatham formally introduced itself as Chatham University on May 1st, 2007.
Did you know that the 39-acre Shadyside Campus is a designated arboretum? In 1998, the American Association of Botanical Gardens and Arboreta recognised the astounding landscape, parts of which were crafted by none other than the esteemed Olmsted Brothers, for the original Andrew Mellon estate.
The story of Chatham University's growth does not end there. In 2005, the university ventured into the digital realm with the introduction of online advanced degree programs. This initiated under the ambit of the School for Continuing and Professional Studies (formerly School of Continuing Education). Two years later, The Atlantic Monthly acknowledged Chatham's MFA in Creative Writing program as one of the top five Innovative/Unique Programs, elevating the university’s eminence even further.
However, it was not all smooth sailing. In 2014, there was a wave of surprise and anger from its alumnae when Chatham announced a period of study "considering admitting men". This came as a jolting shock as it would be the first time in the history of the institution that men would be granted admission. Nevertheless, by the next year, 2015, the gates of Chatham were open to undergraduate men.
As history continued to be written, Chatham University greeted its 10th president, Rhonda Phillips. Phillips is the 10th woman to hold this esteemed position in the university’s 154 year-long journey.
So, as you see, Chatham University is more than just an academic institution. It's a living, evolving entity, built on a rich legacy of transformation, challenge and innovation that welcomes students from across the world.
