History Duquesne University

Back in the day, way back on October 1, 1878 to be exact, there was a man named Fr. Joseph Strub. He and the Holy Ghost Fathers, who had been kicked out of Germany, decided to create a place of learning in Pittsburgh. They named it Pittsburgh Catholic College of the Holy Ghost. Can you believe it started with just six faculty members and 40 students? They rented a space above a bakery on Wylie Avenue to conduct classes. Sounds pretty humble, doesn't it?

Fast forward a few years to 1882, and bam! The college gets its state charter. But they set their sights higher, quite literally. They claim a spot on Pittsburgh's highest point, the Bluff, and construct a five-story red brick building, quaintly named the Old Main in 1885.

Tracing the university's journey to today, we make our first major stop in 1911. Under the guidance of Fr. Martin Hehir, the college ascended to university status, becoming the first Pennsylvania Catholic institution to do so. See, you're already part of a rich tradition! The name changed appropriately to Duquesne University of the Holy Ghost, a nod to Ange Duquesne de Menneville, the French governor who first introduced Catholic traditions to Pittsburgh. The university journeyed into the 20th century with proud achievements, ushering in the first woman, Sister M. Fides, as a graduate in 1913, and setting up a graduate school in 1914.

Moving forward through the roaring 20s, Duquesne University stretched out, developing its resources noticeably. A flurry of construction gave rise to dedicated academic buildings, a gymnasium, and a central heating plant. Despite the devastating financial crash of 1929, Duquesne held steadfast, led by Fr. J. J. Callahan. During his rule, even more new programs were added, including the Nursing School in 1937, which in today's world plays a crucial role.

Our next stop is in the World War II era, arguably the university's darkest days. The enrollment fell dramatically to just 1,000 in the summer of 1944. While in the post-war era, enrollment skyrocketed to 5,500 by 1949 due to the wave of veterans seeking higher education. The post-war period also witnessed some noteworthy additions- newer buildings from Army surplus, an expansion in the science curriculum, and the foundation of WDUQ, Pittsburgh's first college radio station.

Cast your eye over to the 1950s next. A bold campus expansion plan was proposed in 1952 and the first student dormitory, Assumption Hall, greeted its first residents in 1954. Under the leadership of Fr. McAnulty, Fr. Gallager's expansion plans burst into life between 1959 and 1980. They built, they innovated, they transformed. And you know what? They nearly closed due to financial crises in 1970, but the students rose, raising nearly $600,000 to keep Duquesne alive.

In the heart of the 20th century, significant developments took place. The A. J. Palumbo Center began construction under Fr. Donald S. Nesti's tenure, which leads us to the reign of John E. Murray Jr., Duquesne's first lay president. Between 1988 and 2001, the university breathed life into its first new schools in 50 years. Can you picture the transformation?

Now, here we are. Duquesne University, continuously expanding, has just finished the Power Center. That's right, a state-of-the-art mixed-use development project on Forbes Avenue, and a new residence hall completed in 2012. Their next aspiration? An osteopathic medical school slated to admit its first class in 2024. It's a long journey, isn't it? From a rented bakery space to a state-of-the-art campus, the history of Duquesne University is an ongoing tale of ambition, resiliency, innovation, and above all, the desire to provide excellent education.
