Unfolding in 1963, La Roche University, named after Stephanie Amelia la Roche von Starkenfels who was the Sisters of Divine Providence's earliest Mother Superior, sprang to life. Initial steps taken by these pioneering Sisters ventured into providing budding minds with a religious-centric learning avenue.
A mention for the institution's inaugural president - Sister Annunciata Sohl, C.D.P. She led with fortitude till 1968. You'd be thrilled to learn that this once exclusively religious college began flinging doors open for secular students as early as 1965. Journey wasn't easy though, let's shed light on that too.
Within a short span of life, the university encountered financial tremors. Option of shuttering the establishment lurked, yet Sister de la Salle Mahler, C.D.P. (presiding from 1969 to 1975) was not one for retreat. When circumstances got tough, they got creative.
A crucial steering decision came in 1970 when the Board conferred La Roche as an autonomous, co-educational Catholic platform. The cherry on the top was an alliance with the coveted Art Institute of Pittsburgh that undeniably orchestrated a diverse mix of courses - introducing study areas in graphic and interior design - disciplines La Roche is immensely known for, even today.
As students poured into the university in the mid-1970s, erecting new dormitories was imperative. The aforementioned flurry of change was helmed by then president Sister Mary Joan Coultas, C.D.P. (1975-80). An ingenious fundraising crusade was launched and lo, enough funds were gathered to build the Palumbo Science Center, unwrapped in 1980.
The enchanting journey continued under the leadership of Divine Providence Sister Margaret Huber. During her decisive 11 years from 1981, the college was endowed with the Zappala College Centre, a cornerstone marking La Roche's 25th birthday in 1987. The campus saw the addition of the tranquil Magdalen Chapel in 1990 and the much-awaited Kerr Fitness and Sports Center in 1993.
Advancing to 1992, La Roche was graced with the vision of Monsignor William A. Kerr, its sixth president. He played a pivotal role in raising the scholarly visibility of the college and enriching its academic, cultural and athletic spectra. After him, La Roche placed its trust in Sister Candace Introcaso, C.D.P., in 2004.
In a historic move approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education in March 2019, La Roche College became La Roche University. The spectacular chapter of Sister Candace whose leadership breathed life into this transition, however, came to a sudden end on May 22, 2023. Filling her shoes for the time being is the University's Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, Howard Ishiyama.
That's the riveting tale of La Roche University - a journey marked by resolute people, significant milestones and undying spirit of providing quality education. It beckons bright minds from across the globe, painting an impressive picture of its past, ready to write richer stories of its future.
