In the heart of 1933, when women's leadership in any organization was rather unheard of, a remarkable woman named Dorothy Finkelhor, a native of New York, set the foundation of a small business school named Business Training College. With her vision and multitasking abilities, she wore many hats, from teaching to taking care of admission and finance and even janitorial tasks.
The educational space that started with an enrolment of merely 50 students, expanded its roots by 1960. The business school, embracing nearly 880 students, relocated to Pittsburgh's heart, in the central Downtown destination known as Academic Hall. This academic journey evolved further, transforming from a humble secretarial school into the Point Park Junior College, paying tribute to Pittsburgh's historical Point State Park.
The junior college introduced two-year programs in diverse arenas such as engineering technology, journalism, and education. The college's growth saw another crucial milestone when it acquired performing arts space at The Pittsburgh Playhouse in the culturally vibrant neighbourhood of Oakland. Flash forward five years, and Point Park Junior College transfigured into a four-year college officially christened Point Park College. The seeds of illustrious Dance and theatre programs were sown here, laying the strong foundation of Point Park's renowned Conservatory of Performing Arts.
In 1967, after passionately leading the institution for 34 years, Dorothy Finkelhor handed over the mantle of leadership to her son-in-law Arthur M. Blum. Under his presidency, the college saw new heights with the purchase of Sherwyn Hotel, a 20-story architectural marvel opposite Academic Hall. The acquired building, named David L. Lawrence Hall, houses a variety of facilities from classrooms and offices to entertaining spaces and residential facilities.
Blum's leadership also encompassed international growth with the establishment of a Point Park campus in Lugano, Switzerland. Thanks to Lester Hamburg’s generosity, the institution added another feather to its cap, a conference center in Portersville, Pennsylvania. The 70s marked another turning point with John V. Hopkins assuming the presidency. With time the institution's enrollment grew the mark of 1,000 students, and the introduction of a master's degree in Journalism and Mass Communication ensued.
Another milestone was the election of James Hunter as president in the mid-1990s. Despite his short tenure of just over a year, his controversial leadership and an admissions scandal led to internal communication problems.
In the same period, Pittsburgh's economy suffered a major blow due to the collapse of the steel industry. This economic downturn affected the university's finances as well, bringing it on the verge of bankruptcy. Talks of selling Point Park College to the larger Duquesne University were on the table. However, amidst the turmoil, Hunter resigned, and Katherine Henderson came to the helm as the president.
With Henderson in charge, Point Park underwent a revival. She abandoned the idea of selling the college and initiated an overhaul of policies and procedures. Under her successful leadership, the late 1990s saw enrollment rise to over 3,000 students and the college's endowment grow by whopping 200 percent. The turn of the century brought major renovations for existing buildings, and the institution was officially renamed Point Park University in 2004.
The subsequent years saw the University’s growth in the form of a new strategic plan and acquisition of downtown properties for development by president Paul Hennigan. In 2007, the doors of a $16 million state-of-the-art dance complex flung open. The complex received a Gold LEED certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, cementing Point Park's place in the realm of performing arts.
In today's times, Point Park can boast of several achievements, such as the creation of a "New Academic Village" in 2015 and the opening of a student-named coffee shop, Point Perk, in 2018. Moreover, today the university is a significant player in Downtown Pittsburgh real estate development.
