Just imagine, on the 11th of March, 1901, Governor Frank W. Hunt was in a room with a pen in his hand, poised to sign Senate Bill 53. With one stroke of his pen, he brought the Academy of Idaho into being, dependent only on the prerequisite of acquiring private lands to build on. Thanks to Theodore F. Turner, the then-mayor of Pocatello's successful negotiation, the Academy found its permanent location resolving the Battle of Blocks. The Academy of Idaho was officially launched on September 22, 1902, with John W. Faris, appointed by Theodore Swanson, board of trustee member, standing tall as its first principal. By 1910, the Academy was buzzing with nearly 300 students, and its boundaries expanded to include four additional city blocks.
Come 1915, and the Academy was renamed Idaho Technical Institute. The end of World War I spawned an enormous intake of students, with the numbers climbing well over 1,000. It was in the early 1920s that Ralph Hutchinson, the head football coach from 1920 to 1927, introduced the Bengal as the institute's official mascot, and tiger-themed orange and black as official colors. Hutchinson's move was indeed inspired by his alma mater, Princeton, also represented by a tiger.
In 1927, Idaho Technical Institute underwent further change, becoming the University of Idaho–Southern Branch, still a two-year school, steered by executive dean John R. Nichols. With time, the university had the honor to be one of the 131 educational institutions to participate in the WWII V-12 Navy College Training Program, offering students the prospect of a Navy commission.
As Nichols' leadership came to an end in 1946, Carl McIntosh slipped into the role of acting executive dean in early '47. By March, the institute evolved into a full-fledged four-year college, adopting the name Idaho State College. McIntosh found himself at the helm, becoming the youngest college president in America at only 32. Idaho State College was recognized as a degree-conferring institution by December 1948, thanks to McIntosh's relentless efforts, boasting an attendance of 2,000 students by 1949. After McIntosh bid adieu to Idaho State in 1959 to preside over Long Beach State College, Donald E. Walker took his place as successor.
In 1963, the Idaho State College, transcended to Idaho State University, resonating with its newfound stature as a public university. The consequent years saw a steady inflow of students and plentiful new programs. The reign of Richard (Dick) Bowen from 1985 to 2005 is celebrated as a period of exponential growth. His wife, Connie, committed to building community ties and keeping campus traditions alive.
On July 1, 2006, Arthur Vailas, an erstwhile vice chancellor of the University of Houston System, took over as president, succeeding Michael Gallagher. Under his presidency, Idaho State University weathered a storm of a vote of no confidence by faculty and students. Vailas announced his retirement in 2017 but continued his tenure till June 17, 2018, after which Kevin D. Satterlee took the reins. Each of these icons left a unique mark on the institution, leaving a rich heritage for future generations to carry forward as they shape the world of academia.
