Imagine a bunch of over-zealous disciples of learning, brimming with dreams, coming together in November 1867, in the city of sweet cherries – Portland, Oregon. Oh, don't scratch your heads! These blokes embarked upon setting up what we today know as Lewis & Clark College. And why 'Lewis & Clark'? Funnily, it draws its moniker from the legendary explorers Meriwether Lewis & William Clark, keeping the exploration & learning spirit alive.
Now, let's hopscotch to 1905. The staunch Presbyterian Dr. Robert Krohn and chaps laid the College's cornerstone, but it was Rogers, a church minister, who was the first real skipper of this 'Knowledge Ship'. He skillfully navigated through choppy seas of limited resources & insufficient funds, managing to keep the ship afloat. Sounds tough, doesn't it?
By '38 - serving up degrees became the college's daily bread & butter. However, '66 was a ballgame changer as they churned out their first-ever Doctor of Jurisprudence. Oh, and one teeny-weeny, just a tad bit important detail - ever heard of the Green Revolution? Our very own Paul G. Holzworth, the then College's dean, spearheaded it. You gotta admit - not bad, huh?
Fact is though, the college was pretty much a Boys Club till 2001! That was when Jane Atkinson kicked the doors open and stepped onto the concrete as the first lady 'Prez'. Definitely a milestone that had us throw our hats up in the air!
Fast forward to today, and one can safely say - the college which began as a dream has swelled to an entity catering to nearly 3500 students annually. The journey's been long, sure, but every setback’s been faced with a chin up and chest out. It'd be blasphemous not to mention the gallery of accomplished alumni - from Pulitzer winners to Global CEOs, Lewis & Clark has ‘em all.
