Imagine yourself in Ohio, 1945. Ohio University sets up an academic center in Portsmouth, and the seed for Shawnee State University is unknowingly sown. Dazzlingly, it isn't until four decades later that the seed would sprout. The year 1985 marked the conception of what you now know as Shawnee State University, all thanks to one significant man, Vern Riffe. As the Speaker of the Ohio House of Representatives, Riffe introduced legislation to make this dream a reality. With not one but both, the Ohio houses giving their unanimous nod, Governor Richard Celeste enthusiastically inked this proposition into law in 1986.
A year later, in 1987, an exciting announcement came forth. The university's library was now anointed as a federal depository library, a haven for academic pursuits. As Tiffany, a Shawnee State alumna says, "Those late-night study sessions in the library saved my grades more times than I can remember!" This leap only marked the beginning of a series of progressive strides that the university was destined to take.
The joyous moment of 1990 is still fresh in the walls of Shawnee State University. The university, authorized by the state Regents, issued its first bachelor's degrees—a proud moment indeed. More so, considering that just two years earlier, they were authorized to establish baccalaureate programs.
The new millennium brought with it new advances. In 2000 the university unveiled its first master's degree program. Within a decade, in 2010, it inaugurated its second master's program—the Master of Education. Today, it also offers a Master of Science in Mathematical Sciences and a Master of Occupational Therapy, evidence of its continuous evolution in offering high-quality education.
But, no journey is complete without its share of trials, and Shawnee State faced one such in 2022. The university found itself in the middle of a court case, stirred by a professor who had previously been disciplined for refusing to use a transgender student's pronouns. The professor sued the university in 2018 for the alleged violations of the First and Fourteenth Amendment. A hefty settlement of $400,000 later, the professor took home only $5000 while the remaining sum found its way to his attorneys from the Alliance Defending Freedom, a D.C area-based organization.
Before the lawsuit, the University had proposed a mutually acceptable compromise. The professor could address all students merely by their first names or their last names, complying with his religious beliefs. However, the professor resisted. He proposed using no titles or pronouns for the said student while maintaining the use of honorifics like Mr. and Ms. for all others. The University declined this offer for treating a student differently, something in violation of the federal civil rights laws. The settlement reached was primarily economic, not a testament to any violation by the University.
