In the geographical heart of Texas lies a special place, Prairie View A&M University. Our wonderful story begins on a bright spring day, April 19, 1879 to be exact. You see, the United States had ended its bruising Civil War, and was in the process of rebuilding, better known as the Reconstruction Era. Yes, it was during this period that Prairie View A&M was born.
Our founding fathers were two extraordinary men. Matthew Gaines, a state senator, and William H. Holland, a state representative, both of whom were formerly enslaved people, yet went on to become distinguished political figures. Harnessing their determination and political craft, they created legislation to establish a state-supported "Agricultural and Mechanical" college for African Americans – an impressive first for Texas!
By 1945, our institution had evolved and expanded. Consequently, we rebranded from Prairie View Normal and Industrial College to Prairie View University. This isn’t a small modification as we started offering the same array of courses as the University of Texas. Only two years later, our name was changed again, to Prairie View A&M College of Texas. The change reflected our commitment to providing a diverse and comprehensive curriculum.
Fast forward to 1973, our beloved institution underwent its final name change, evolving into the Prairie View Agricultural & Mechanical University, or Prairie View A&M University as we fondly call it today.
Isn't that something? And our journey didn’t stop there. Moving on to 1983, the Texan Legislature took a step forward, proposing a constitutional amendment. Excitingly, this amendment saw Prairie View A&M University earmarked as a beneficiary of the Permanent University Fund (PUF) proceeds. The proposal was voted in favour on November 6, 1984, marking a significant turn of events.
The dawn of the new millennium saw us solidifying our commitment to open access. Have you ever heard of the Priority Plan in 2000? Well, it was a remarkable agreement with the U.S. Department of Education that intended to make Prairie View A&M University accessible for all Texans. This plan ushered in a plethora of new academic programs and facilities, allowing us to further enrich the learning experience we offer.
We've been the recipient of some serious generosity too. In December 2020, we were gifted a staggering $50 million by philanthropist, MacKenzie Scott. Tremendously, this donation holds the record for being the largest single gift in our history and among the largest received by a Historically Black College and University (HBCU).
And just last year, in 2021, we attained the prestigious R2 Carnegie Classification – a recognition denoting great research activities. Only 11 HBCUs have been awarded this stature, and we feel honoured to be on that list.
