History University of Maryland Eastern Shore

Let's embark on an interesting historical journey, going back a century or so. Back in time to September 13th, 1886, when the doors of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) first opened. The university, known for its evolving role and location, has witnessed its name change multiple times over three centuries, reflecting its dynamic journey.

Imagine, in the beginning there were only nine students. They were welcomed to a fully converted farmhouse on a small 16-acre plot by Benjamin and Portia Bird. The university started off under the support of the Delaware Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church and was initially planned as a preparatory institution for the Centenary Biblical Institute, a private school in Baltimore linked with the Methodist Episcopal Church.

The streak of transformations started as early as 1890. The university changed its name to pay tribute to the very first chairman of its board of trustees resulting in its new name, Morgan College which is now known as Morgan State University. Seeing the year end with a promising number of 37 students, it was clear the institute was gaining traction.

Then came the challenging times of segregation, due to which, African-American students couldn't get admissions at the Maryland Agriculture College. Those were the years of paramount importance as the Congress passed the Second Morrill Act of 1890. This demanded the establishment of colleges for African-Americans to retain land-grant funds. And guess what? Maryland seized this opportunity to formally collaborate with Morgan for fostering land-grant education, especially for African-Americans dwelling on Maryland's lower Eastern Shore.

Step into the 20th Century, and the University turned into a familiar name as the Princess Anne Academy. Though some also referred to it as the industrial branch of Morgan. Maryland state intertwining with Morgan led the university to sometimes also be referred to as the Eastern Shore Branch of Maryland Agriculture College.

The Great Depression saw a major shift. The Maryland courts commanded the state to accept qualified African-American applicants at its state-funded law school in Baltimore - a decision that, historians believe, led to the Princess Anne Academy becoming a publicly funded establishment.

History took a pivotal turn 50 years post its opening. The school that was formerly church-controlled transitioned into a state-owned institution. This came about after four installments of $25,000 each, right when the school was gaining recognition as a degree-offering college. Come 1948, and the ever-changing princess of education was renamed again as Maryland State College, a part of the University of Maryland.

July 1, 1970, marked the birth of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore from what was previously Maryland State College. Today, UMES proudly stands as one of 12 public higher education institutions of the University System of Maryland.

Not just 745 acres of its main campus in Princess Anne, UMES spreads its academic prowess to a 385-acre research farm in southern Somerset County, and runs the Paul S. Sarbanes Coastal Ecology Center on a neighboring eight-acre land near Assateague Island in Worcester County.

Over time, UMES has worked diligently to expand its academic reach and reputation. Offering instruction across 37 undergraduate areas, along with 15 master's programs in addition to eight doctoral-degree programs, 27 of which are peer-accredited.

As its history were not rich enough, 2020 marked an unforgettable milestone when MacKenzie Scott donated an overwhelming sum of $20 million to UMES, the largest single gift that the University has ever received in its vibrant history. The compelling saga of University of Maryland Eastern Shore is indeed exceptional, with its ups and downs, the determination and the achievements painting a vivid picture of perseverance and growth. Stay tuned for what the future holds because the journey of UMES is far from over.
