In the depths of the bustling Lower East Side of New York City, the roots of Manhattanville College were taking shape over 175 years ago. Originally an Academy of the Sacred Heart, the institution was carefully placed near the historic Old Saint Patrick's Cathedral. The setting was a labyrinth of confined streets in southeast Manhattan, an exciting corner of the island bordered by the East River.
A few years later in September 1844, the academy relocated to Ravenswood, nestled within the Astoria section of Queens. The expectation was grand: Archbishop John Hughes envisioned the academy rising as the leading educational haven for young ladies within the archdiocese of New York. However, as fate would have it, the location soon felt too remote and posed challenges for students to regularly participate in the Mass.
Always evolving and growing, the academy found its new home in 1847 at the former estate of Jacob Lorillard in Manhattanville, a rural village of the Upper West Side of Manhattan. The academy adopted an enduring bond with the quaint village, evident in the name it carries today. During this period, Manhattanville bloomed as a vibrant educational center, welcoming 280 girls by the time of the American Civil War in 1861.
As the 19th century drew to a close, this burgeoning academy began offering post-high school programs to its students in 1880. The students came from diverse backgrounds, with recent immigrants from Latin America and Europe living and learning side by side. This breakthrough paved the way for higher education opportunities, positioning Manhattanville as a beacon of growth and transformation.
As the years rolled by, transforming the farming village into a neighborhood in West Harlem, the academy evolved into the prestigious College of the Sacred Heart. Its first baccalaureate degrees were granted in 1918. This was a time of remarkable growth, not just for the college, but for the city itself. The college was officially christened as “Manhattanville College of the Sacred Heart” in 1937.
It's worth noting that Manhattanville made a remarkable stand for racial equality in May 1933, long before the Civil Rights Movement. It demonstrated an unwavering commitment to racial justice, reaffirmed by admitting its first African American woman student in 1938. This decision drew mixed responses but positioned Manhattanville as a leader in higher education and human rights.
Once World War II was over, New York City saw an influx of students craving education, leading to overcrowded campuses. Manhattanville was no exception and found itself being pursued by City College of New York for expansion. The outcome was a historic $8.8 million transaction, resulting in a pivotal move to the suburban Westchester County in Purchase, New York in 1951.
The following years saw exponential growth in Manhattanville's student population, soaring from 400 women students in 1950 to 1,400 students by 1970. This period was the microhistory of transformation, not just in the Catholic Church and higher education, but in American society as a whole.
In 1966, The Board of Trustees removed the words "of the Sacred Heart" from the official college name, an important step towards secularization. Significant changes, including admitting male students and the gradual removal of Catholic symbols and traditions, were made. The first coeducational freshman class entered Manhattanville in August 1971.
Continuing to evolve, Manhattanville introduced portfolio-based assessment, Masters and doctoral programs over the subsequent decades. Today, with 16 presidents steering its course since its inception, Manhattanville remains an iconic testament to education, diversity and resilience.
Through the numerous relocations, name changes, and transformations, the spirit of Manhattanville has endured and thrived. The challenges faced and accolades earned by this pioneer in education fuel the pride of every student. So, as you embark on your educational journey, remember that you’re becoming part of an institution that boasts over 175 years of history, resilience and excellence. Manhattanville College waits to welcome you, to learn, grow and carry forward its rich legacy.
