Once upon a time, on September 25, 1900, an innovative group of Methodist clergy and laymen, with a strong commitment to the 19th-century Holiness movement, dreamt of crafting an educational hub. They founded a co-educational institute within the exotic landscapes of Garden View House tucked away in Saratoga Springs, New York, which they christened the Pentecostal Collegiate Institute (PCI). Their dream was to offer liberal education and ministry training under the umbrella of a preparatory academy, a four-year college, and a theological seminary. Lyman C. Pettit, the pioneering spirit of the bunch, took the mantle as its first president.
But the journey wasn't smooth. Unexpectedly, the dream of creating a liberal arts college had to be postponed due to a feud between Pettit and the Association of Pentecostal Churches of America (APCA). It was decided that the school needed a fresh start somewhere new – Rhode Island. On September 16, 1902, in North Scituate, Rhode Island, the college reopened its doors. Though it lacked a post-secondary curriculum, its spirits were undeterred.
The land in Rhode Island was hand-selected by Fred A. Hillery. Numerous elegant Greek Revival buildings, remnants of the Smithville Seminary designed by the renowned architect Russell Warren, lay dormant since their construction in 1839. A new chapter was set to begin after this land lay idle since 1876. The newly relocated school attracted students from various denominations, enriching its campus with diverse perspectives.
Fast forward to 1917 and the decision to develop the liberal arts college was finally taken! Here comes June 14, 1918 – Eastern Nazarene College (ENC) is granted the esteemed privilege of being a degree-authorized institution in Rhode Island. The name decision wasn't easy, a series of potential names were tossed around, including "Nazarene College of the Northeast." Finally, thanks to the suggestion of General Superintendent John W. Goodwin, the institution adopted its present name.
The story takes a significant turn in 1919 when ENC relocated to the vibrant locale of Quincy, Massachusetts, aiming to set up shop near esteemed institutions like Harvard and Yale. Why Quincy over New Haven, Connecticut? The superior educational standards in Massachusetts and a president-elect who had a fondness for Boston!
This was only the beginning of the ENC expansion. The years that followed brought growth and prosperity. ENC thrived with its diversity, never confined to a single denomination but inviting to all. Teaching complexities didn't deter them; they embraced all facets of knowledge, even teaching evolutionary biology in the classrooms by the late 1930s.
One of the significant moments in the college's history was when ENC received an accreditation from the New England Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools on December 3, 1943 - becoming the second Nazarene-affiliated institution to gain such recognition. As if setting a new benchmark, in 1944 they also formed an affiliation with Quincy City Hospital, initiating a training program for nurses.
Despite obstacles, ENC never faltered on its visionary path. In the 1960s, theology graduate courses gave way to a master's degree program in religion. The 1970s saw the proposal to relocate the college to Pennsylvania get shelved due to student protests and governor intervention. In the late 1980s and early 90s, ENC extended its services to assist working adults and contributed significantly to the local economy, a fact acknowledged by a report from the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities in Massachusetts (AICUM) in 1991.
The late 20th century and early 21st century saw an exponential expansion. From the establishment of learning annexes in central Massachusetts and satellite campuses in various cities to introducing new policies for faculty hires, ENC sprung towards progress. It grew not just in size but in its academic spectrum, paving the way for future generations of students to follow.
The 100-year journey of Eastern Nazarene College from its humble beginnings to expanding beyond Quincy and Boston to become a beacon of education is an inspiration. A testament to the resilience, adaptability, and unwavering commitment to education and service.
