Once upon a time, in the year 1858, a band of dedicated Franciscan friars journeyed from Germany. Their mission? To serve the German-speaking community, amidst the wild frontier of the then, Illinois state. On the 6th of February, 1860, they laid the foundation for St. Francis Solanus College, nestling it gently at the junction of 8th and Maine Street.
Fast-forward to 1863, and enter our hero, Fr. Anselm Mueller. Under his watchful and pioneering leadership, spanning a remarkable 37 years, the college started to unfurl its wings in its now known location along the tranquil College Avenue.
The tides of history turned with World War II, and Quincy University found itself nurturing Army reservists and Navy cadets. As peace was restored, the university opened its arms to even more students, crossing the 1,000 enrollment mark in the late 1950s. Are you keeping up so far? Good, because, the academic wonders of the world don't stop there!
In the midst of the booming 1950s and 1960s, expansion couldn't wait. New edifices rose, brimming with knowledge and laughter, answering the cries of its burgeoning student body. From its inception, Quincy University demonstrated a profound love for liberal arts without overlooking the weight of professional programs.
Want some evidence? If we travel back in time to the 1870s, we find course catalogs, awash with a strong focus on liberal arts, co-habitating with courses on accounting and other "money matters". Yes, the university's heart belonged to arts and professions, and it continues to beat with the same rhythm.
Into the 1930s, the university boasted under 300 students. It must be mentioned that it welcomed its first female student in the glamorous 1920s and flung open its doors to women on a regular basis by 1932. From the 1870s to the 1950s, majority of the campus life droned buzzing with activity in the picturesque Francis Hall, serving as a perfect backdrop for its strong German architectural flair.
After twirling through a couple of names in the course of the 20th century, the robust identity of Quincy University was finally christened in 1993. The new name represented not just the acceptance of graduate programs but also it recognizing its maturity and grandeur.
Through the course of its illustrious past, Quincy University had the honor of being a stronghold of Franciscan intellectuals who enlightened young minds and souls. Even 'til the era of the late 20th century, Franciscan friars represented a large part of the university faculty. Many friars within the Midwest found their academic homes in Quincy. Despite revealing heart-breaking financial woes in 2016 and running a deficit of $5 million, Quincy University stood tall. The strenuous efforts of major donors brewed a much-needed fiscal rescue plan. By November 2018, the U.S. Department of Education extended a helping hand with a donation of $2.25 million to enhance access to the STEM fields.
Then, as the thunderous year of 2020 rolled in, Quincy University launched their novel Success by Design venture. In this refreshing initiative, each and every undergraduate pledged to craft and update an individualized student success blueprint every year, replete with hands-on research and internships.
In a rather recent development, 2021 saw the generous Oakley family of Quincy extend a magnanimous $6.5 million gift to the university. Part of this generous offering brought into existence the Oakley School of Business, making it more than double the previous largest gift the university had ever received.
