History South Dakota School of Mines and Technology

It all began on a remarkable day, August 19, 1885, when the first brick of the iconic School of Mines building was laid. Even though it was then known as Dakota School of Mines, this pioneer institution unfolded its teaching journey less than two years later, on February 21, 1887. The first chapter of success got inked when John W. Hancher bagged the first bachelor of science degree on May 31, 1888. And with the birth of South Dakota as an official state, the school promptly switched its badge to South Dakota School of Mines in the year 1889.

Fast forward to 1904, the school amazed visitors with its intriguing exhibits at the World's fair. And then, just a few years later in December 1911, the school's campus experienced something revolutionary. They established the first licensed radio station in the state, a full decade swifter than their competitor, WCAT. The technology strides of South Dakota School of Mines were making national headlines.

Come October 5, 1912, the first “M-Day” homecoming celebration marked a special milestone with the creation of the monogram 'M' on M-Hill. It symbolically adorned the identity of the school’s mountain flank, celebrating the spirit of homecoming. Additionally, when World War I cast a devastating spell worldwide, the school did its part by forming an ROTC battalion in 1918.

In the1930s the school added yet another feather to its hat! They undertook the grand project of a football stadium. It was completed in the year 1938 and named O’Harra Field, offering an exhilarating venue for recognizing student sports talent. A few years later in February 1943, the institution was officially designated as South Dakota School of Mines & Technology, marking a stepping stone in its journey.

Come September 2012, it was a moment of glory for the institution when they surpassed Harvard. Bloomberg acknowledged South Dakota Mines for its impressive starting salaries offered to graduates. However, the following year on September 19, they suffered a great loss when the university's president, Dr. Robert A Wharton, lost his battle with cancer. Until a new president was recruited, Duane C. Hrncir held the presidential position in the interim.

April 25, 2013, brought a historical change to this institution. Heather Wilson was announced to take over presidency, becoming the first female president in the school's 128-year history in June 2013. Unfortunately, in 2017, she had to step down from her post due to her appointment as the Secretary of the United States Air Force.

In October 2017, another striking announcement was made about the recruitment of the next president. The chosen one was James (Jim) Rankin, Ph.D., who was going to lead the institution to its future accomplishments. Thus, the story of the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology continues, leaving an indelible mark in the annals of education and technology.
