Once upon a time, in the early 20th century, a group of people decided to bring light of knowledge to a picturesque town of Redlands, California. The year was 1907, when University of Redlands opened its doors with just a few fearless souls at helm.
Now, Redlands wasn’t a sprawling metropolis, it was just a little nugget of gold waiting to be polished into something more. A handful of folks, like Rev. Edward P. Baker, Albert Smiley and Carl G. Doney stood solid as bricks, determined to give the town its own intellectual hub.
Aha! So, by 1909, they managed to gather enough dough (it was about $35,000, no small potatoes in those days!) to establish the first buildings. By the next year, more than 59 students stepped into this cognitive paradise. Though the number seems modest in today's term, believe it or not, it created quite a bustle back then!
Fast forward to 1914, and something wonderful happened. Redlands embarked on its first graduation ceremony. A batch of 9 bright buttons, whooshed out of Redlands equipped with a heaping spoonful of knowledge and a can-do spirit, ready to conquer the world!
Hitting the mid-century mark, Redlands underwent a major facelift. The 1950s saw the birth of new wings, the Johnston College of Integrative Studies and School of Business, tickling the curiosity of those who sought unconventional paths to success. Aha! This is where things started getting really interesting!
