Picture this, 1847, an ambitious project known as the "Friends Boarding School" kicks off. Its mission? To primarily provide religious instruction to young Quaker minds of high school age. Yet, in twelve short years, the institution would make a pivotal transformation. Now christened Earlham College, the boarding school developed into a full-fledged higher education college in 1859.
The United States already had a couple of Quaker colleges. Haverford was numero uno, and Guilford held the second spot. Earlham, however, had ambitions that transcended rankings. Stepping forward in 1859, Earlham emerged as only the second U.S institute to embrace the coeducational model, just after Oberlin College. Providing equal educational opportunities to both men and women, this pivot became a marked shift in the college's identity.
If you think the change stopped there, you're mistaken. In the beginning, Earlham catered exclusively to students of the Religious Society of Friends. But the chains of exclusivity were broken in 1865. Earlham expanded its embrace, admitting non-Quakers to its scholarly fold. Why Earlham? The college is named after Earlham Hall, a stronghold in England for the significant Quaker family of Gurneys.
Our journey doesn't stop here. Quakerism in America was undergoing its changes, becoming more progressive with time. Earlham wasn't far behind; it mirrored this evolution. Today, however, it still stays committed to its original Quaker principles. It's about maintaining a delicate balance, a dance between transformation and tradition.
Let's jump to 1960, a big leap in Earlham's journey. This year witnessed the birth of the Earlham School of Religion. With this addition, it was the only Friends seminary worldwide at the time, another shining feather in Earlham's proud Quaker cap.
In more recent times, 2017 to be precise, Earlham achieved another milestone. Alan C. Price took over as Earlham's president. Not just any president; Price was the first African-American to hold this prestigious position at Earlham. His tenure, however, was short. A year later, in July 2018, Price moved on, and he was later appointed director of the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in November that same year, in Boston.
Now, that’s the Earlham story. Whew! What an inspired journey, right? From a humble Quaker boarding school to the inclusive, coeducational institution we see today. We hope your bag is packed, because it's waiting just for you to join the journey. So, are you ready to write your chapter in the Earlham story?
