Picture this scenario - in 1908, a successful entrepreneur, John Francis Dodge, together with his wife Matilda bought a humble farmhouse stretched over 320 acres of beautiful land in central Oakland County. And that was how it all began. This abode, known as Meadow Brook Farms, was the harbinger of what would become a heralded centre of learning- Oakland University.
Now let's go forward a bit, to 1920, when Matilda inherited John's fortune after his unfortunate demise. Not long after, she embarked on a new journey in life, marrying Alfred G. Wilson, a powerful presence in the lumber industry. Fuelled by their combined resources, between 1926 and 1929, the couple transformed their land into something more regal - the majestic Meadow Brook Hall.
Jump to 1957, a significant year for Oakland County. Matilda Dodge Wilson and her then-husband, Alfred Wilson, decided to gift their 1,443-acre estate to Michigan State University. With this generous donation, including Meadow Brook Hall, Sunset Terrace and all the estate's other buildings and collections, there was also a humongous contribution of $2 million. This marked the inception of an educational institution that would eventually become an educational luminary.
The story of Oakland University starts on Squirrel Road in Pontiac Township, where the main campus buildings were first erected. Known as Michigan State University–Oakland in 1959, the university started to welcome its very first students. It would not keep its original name for long, though, becoming Oakland University in 1963. An ending of sorts took place in 1970 when it became officially independent of Michigan State University.
The university's history took an interesting twist when, despite the main campus being in Pontiac Township, it got a Rochester, Michigan, mailing address. You might ask how this happened. Here's how - Matilda Wilson insisted with U.S. Postmaster General Arthur Summerfield that the university must hold the Rochester address. After reminding him of her substantial contributions in his administration, her request was granted.
In September 2009, a less than pleasant episode occurred with tenured faculty members going on strike. There were several concerning issues - the university claimed ownership over professor's copyrights and patents, faculty lacked say in fundamental matters like class size, curricula, the reduction of health benefits, and above all, a three-year salary freeze. This took place in stark contrast to university president Gary Russi who had just received a $100,000 raise in his pay. Luckily, after a week, both sides reached an amicable agreement, and the faculty returned to work.
The stage was graced by some of America's finest in 2012 when Oakland University hosted the Republican presidential debate on November 9th. This event was broadcasted nationally by CNBC and eight presidential candidates participated, making it an enriching episode in the annals of the University.
A page-turner happened in 2013 when the Oakland University Board of Trustees approved a massive $65 million investment to expand and uplift the campus. Key improvements included new student housing, outdoor recreation and athletic fields enhancements, construction of a significant 1240-space parking structure, and headquarters for facility and grounds maintenance operations. Amidst all these developments, a generous donation from Hugh and Nancy Elliott resulted in the development of the 151-foot Elliott Carillon Tower.
Cut to May 4, 2017, a day when the name, Ora Hirsch Pescovitz, M.D. echoed in the corridors of the university, as she was announced as the seventh president of Oakland University. Her tenure marked an era of growth and prestige membership for the University. Hirsch's contract was extended to June 2025 and she was bestowed with the prestigious 2023 Michiganian of the Year for her outstanding leadership at Oakland University.
Moving now to the fall semester of 2022, the student community of Oakland University burgeoned to over 16,108 students, attesting to the popularity and quality of the institution. The university takes pride in being the 6th largest of the 4-year universities in Michigan - a testament to its unending zeal for imparting premium quality education. The university, as we know it today, was built over time by the contributions and efforts of many notable personalities, making it a prized destination for quality education actualised through generations of history.
