In 1891, two rivals joined forces to create a single entity that would go on to become an iconic educational institute. These were the Rochester Athenæum, a literary society gasping for survival, founded back in 1829 under the guidance of Colonel Nathaniel Rochester, and the Mechanics Institute, the brainchild of Captain Henry Lomb and other noble hearts that came into existence in 1885. The resulting advent, known as Rochester Athenæum and Mechanics Institute (RAMI), reflected the enduring spirit of both institutions.
The Mechanics Institute, seen as the more resilient of the two, assumed the founding charter of Rochester Athenaeum from 1829. The years between the merger till 1944, saw students, faculty and admin alike pay tribute to the 1885 founding charter of the erstwhile Mechanics Institute and its former identity. Eventually, it emerged from its cocoon in 1944, blooming into the Rochester Institute of Technology and reinstating the founding charter of The Athenaeum, marking its evolution into a fully-fledged research university.
The university's initial base was in Rochester, New York, within a block framed by the Erie Canal, South Plymouth Avenue, Spring Street, and South Washington Street. The prime location of the art department was the Bevier Memorial Building. However, growth called for expansion, and the crammed conditions with high property prices posed a challenge. In 1959, the New York Department of Public Works slated a new freeway straight through the university, which dubbed its plan 'the Inner Loop,' proving an obstacle too big for the growing institution.
Enter Grace Watson. In 1961, this generous local made a hefty donation of $3.27 million that enabled the university to leapfrog south and lay claim to a sprawling 1,300-acre (5.3 km2) campus along the serene east bank of the Genesee River in the suburbs of Henrietta. The move to this new embracing campus, nested away from the bustle of the city, was completed in 1968.
Just shy of this epic move, RIT had another feather to add to its cap. In 1966, it was chosen by Uncle Sam to host the National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID) - a pioneering initiative to date. NTID warmly welcomed its first students in 1968, coinciding perfectly with RIT's relocation to Henrietta.
In 1979, RIT took under its wing Eisenhower College, a liberal arts institution in Seneca Falls, New York. Despite promising to keep the institution functioning for another five years, RIT announced in 1982 that Eisenhower would immediately cease operations. Eisenhower's academic program had its last say in the 1982–83 academic year on the RIT Henrietta campus, with the final graduation ceremony conducted in Seneca Falls the following May.
Positively refusing to rest on its laurels, RIT continued to push the boundaries of education. The university introduced the nation's first Bachelor of Science program in microelectronic engineering in 1982, developed the first-of-its-kind Ph.D. program in imaging science in 1990, and launched the first nationally recognized IT degree in 1993. In 1996, RIT stamped its mark yet again by introducing the first undergraduate Software Engineering degree available in the U.S. Sections for the new comers, you might ask? This is the history weaved by miracle makers, dream weavers, and knowledge seekers like RIT. By understanding this journey, your journey to academic excellence can become a remarkable echo.
