Once upon a time, in 1866, an extraordinary man named Benjamin Titus Roberts dreamed of building an institution for higher learning. Roberts, a passionate activist who bravely campaigned against slavery and poverty, was known for his fierce advocacy of women's suffrage. It was with this burning desire for social justice that he founded Chili Seminary with the aim of developing young, principled servant leaders.
Imagine, in the early days, classes held in a local tavern! In 1869, a brand-new, three-story brick establishment rose - a firm testament to Roberts's unyielding commitment. Despite its humble beginnings, the institution ignited a spark in the hearts of 56 eager students in its very first year.
Fast forward to 1885; amid the changing tides of time, the Seminary also underwent a change - it was renamed to Chesbrough Seminary, after a generous benefactor, A.M. Chesbrough who donated a charismatic $30,000.
Now, picture this - it's the autumn of 1892. Two resplendent structures known as Cox Hall and Roberts Hall stand completed. Cox Hall, serving as classrooms and an administrative hub, is currently home to the Department of Music and Performing Arts. Do you know, the very first public event in Cox Hall was a somber one - the funeral of our founder, B.T. Roberts, in 1893.
The year 1929 marked a significant milestone - a sidewalk was laid between Cox and Roberts Hall. It was lovingly done by the students, signaling their deep connection with the institution.
As time flew, in 1935, Carpenter Hall was born. Named after a dedicated teacher, Adella P. Carpenter, who served our institution delightfully from 1877 to 1916. This hall became the lively heartbeat of the campus - housing the library, dining hall, and dorms. Today, it’s the bustling hub for the Art, Social Work, and Psychology Departments.
In an honorable gesture, the college was renamed to Roberts Junior College in 1945, paying a heartfelt tribute to our beloved founder B.T. Roberts. This signified our profound respect for him, likewise his establishment, the Free Methodist Church. With the turn of a new decade, the institution morphed into Roberts Wesleyan College in 1949. This signaled a crucial transition from a two-year program to a four-year baccalaureate institute and proudly identified within the Wesleyan theological tradition.
Our growth didn't stop there; in 1998, we established the Northeastern Seminary, further enhancing our graduate school of theology. On September 13, 2022, we evolved into Roberts Wesleyan University, with thanks to the New York State Education Department and the Board of Regents.
In a bitter-sweet announcement made on January 26, 2023, it was revealed that our 11th president, Deana Porterfield, would bid us goodbye in June. After an illustrious term, she is set to steer Seattle Pacific University as its new president later in 2023. The baton of leadership was then passed on to Rupert A. Hayles Jr., our newest captain, to navigate our university's journey ahead.
From a local tavern to a lively university, Roberts Wesleyan has come a long way, all thanks to the hard work, dedication, and vision of its founders, supporters, devoted faculty, and driven students. Who knows? Perhaps the next page of history will be written by you!
