Picture this, the year is 1886, and in Massachusetts, a man named Robert Charles Winthrop is leading the Peabody Education Board. Their latest project? An ambitious step to form the Winthrop Training School, a grand institution solely for educating white women to become talented teachers. With an initial investment of $1,500, their dream soon became reality, welcoming twenty-one eager students that same year in Columbia, South Carolina.
Winthrop Training School wasn't content with just settling – change was on the horizon. In 1891, just five years into shaping future educators, the school adopted a new name; the South Carolina Industrial and Winthrop Normal College. The idea behind the new name was capturing its expansion beyond teacher training. It wanted to touch the realms of industrial education as well.
But the winds of change didn't stop blowing. In 1893, it morphed into the Winthrop Normal and Industrial College of South Carolina. Now, might you be wondering why? Well, the name shift mirrored its shifting mission; they were preparing some of their students for jobs in the booming industrial sector.
In 1895, the institution embarked on a new journey. Charleston was left behind as the college found its new abode in Rock Hill. But the story continues and the college changed its name a fourth time in 1920, embracing the title of Winthrop College, the South Carolina College for Women. At the height of the roaring '20s, Winthrop College was the second largest women's college in the whole United States. Impressive, isn't it?
Change was afoot again in 1964, with the college embracing the winds of diversity and becoming an integrated institution. By 1974, an act of the state legislature propelled it another step forward - Winthrop College became coeducational. From a humble training school, Winthrop was now a fully-fledged college with a rich four-year curriculum, and even a graduate division. Its evolving nature was recognized by 1992, and it took on yet another new name - Winthrop University.
Did you know that Winthrop University has been graced by the presence of several historical figures? First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt paid a visit in 1943. Barack Obama, during his initial presidential run, spoke here in 2008. In 2023, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. hosted a town hall in the university's McBryde Hall.
