Once upon a time, in the bustling year of 1857, when the echoes of California's gold rush still lingered, there sprouted an idea – an idea like a seed, intending to grow into a tree of knowledge. That idea? The very first institution of learning in California. Drumroll please... It's none other than California State University, or what the locals affectionately call, 'Cal State.'
This university's story started when a gang of visionaries, including Dr. Charles H. Allen, stepped up saying "Hell yeah, let’s set up a school." And not just any school, they had their sights set on higher education, not witnessed before in the Golden State. So, they took their idea straight to the California State Legislature, preached their vision there!, and voila, legislation was passed!
Round about 1862, the first brick was laid for the Minns' Evening Normal School in San Francisco. Even back then you see, it wasn't all about sunshine in California, education had a room under the moonlight too. Oh, folks, ‘Normal School’ here doesn’t mean just the regular studies, but a teacher-training institute, pretty 'un-normal', huh?
Big day came in 1870, when said school became the California State Normal School – flashy new name huh? And more importantly, official recognition from the state. The first step, or should I say, the first page in the chapter of the prestigious Cal State story.
Fast-forward to 1887, and things really began to zip along. State Normal School found its new home in Southern California at Los Angeles and from there, it wasn’t a hop, skip and a jump, but a giant leap into becoming the largest public university system in the US.
Now, mind you, nothing worth having comes easy – and that includes a name. The school tossed up and down between California State Teachers College, San Jose State College before finally settling on California State University in 1972. Phew, talk about identity crises, right?!
