The year is 1960. A little spark of inspiration hits the California State Legislature and they decide to set up an educational beacon, Sonoma State College. They aren't in it alone. They have the dedicated backing of distinguished academic peers from San Francisco State University. As it so happened, a little twist of fate in the educational governance structure placed Sonoma and all state colleges in California under the mantle of the California State University system.
Fast forward to 1961 and the first cluster of eager students - all 250 of them - populate the newly opened campus. Their classes are taught in rented buildings nestled in the heart of Rohnert Park. And the first degree on offer? A Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education. Despite the humble beginnings, the students and faculty are unfazed, even holding their graduation ceremony in the parking lot of the makeshift campus.
With the establishment of two primary academic buildings - Stevenson and Darwin Halls - in 1966, the college finally moved its operations to a sprawling 215-acre area. The first students to earn their degrees from this brand-new campus form the inaugural graduating class.
As student registration climbs, the University recognises the need for more facilities; a demand that leads to the construction of Ives Hall for performing arts, The University Commons for dining, a library, and a gymnasium. These fresh structures adhere to a master plan of infusing an urban character into the campus. Everything from smooth concrete building facades, meticulously landscaped courtyards to the "Campus Lakes," is inspired by this plan.
In the tumultuous climate of 1970, the University was momentarily shuttered by orders of the then-Governor Ronald Reagan due to prevalent anti-war sentiments. However, those hard times passed and the development of the campus continued unabated. It bore fruit in 1976 with the completion of the Student Union, certifying the University's commitment towards fostering a vibrant student community life.
Sonoma State College metamorphosed into Sonoma State University in 1978, proudly gaining its university status. This transition was celebrated with the development of a large swimming pool and a 500-seat theatre, capturing the ethos of the University's focus on holistic development.
Welcoming the millennia, Sonoma State University sees a powerful evolution with the addition of 48-acres in 2001. A robust increase in residential student population leads to the formation of Sauvignon Village, catering to the dwelling needs of non-freshman students. Jean and Charles Schulz Information Center, donated by famed cartoonist Charles Schulz and his wife Jean, opens its doors housing more than 400,000 volumes. The Information Center quickly becomes the beating heart of modern intellectual life at the University.
From hereon, the University sees a flurry of developments - a thorough revamp of Darwin Hall, the establishment of the Don and Maureen Green Music Centre, reinforcements to the on-campus social structure in 2011, and the commencement of its eighth permanent president - Ming-Tung "Mike" Lee in 2023. Over six decades, the University's unwavering commitment to empowering young minds has remained resolute, crafting a unique mix of academic grit and societal consciousness for its students. Today, Sonoma State University's legacy is etched in its commitment towards cultivating intellectual growth, honing leadership skills, and nurturing a strong sense of social responsibility amongst its students.
