History Columbia College

Once upon a time, in the year 1754, thanks to a royal charter granted by King George II of Britain, an acorn of knowledge was sown on this land. This acorn, as small and insignificant as it may have seemed, grew and spread its branches wide, transforming into the mighty tree of knowledge we now call Columbia College! Imagine that, folks, a college with a royal heritage! Talk about an elite education!

The inception took place in a modest schoolhouse smack dab near Trinity Church, in Lower Manhattan. From the get-go, it showed serious academic ambitions, naming itself King's College—for royalty, by royalty, that's how they rolled! Oh, did I mention, our first president was none other than Dr. Samuel Johnson, not to be mistaken with the English writer, but equally in love with books!

As every plot twist goes, the American Revolution served as a turning point for our grand college. Going incognito, the college had a brief stint as an army hospital! Talk about multitasking, am I right? Only popping back up to the surface in 1784, after gaining its new name, Columbia College, now resurfacing as an all-American college!

Location, location, location! It's not just important for property but for colleges too! In 1857, stepping up its game, Columbia College traded its original spot for a swanky new mid-Manhattan location on the then-fashionable Madison Avenue. Gotta keep up with the Joneses, after all!

Columbia College wasn't content being a trendsetter; it pushed boundaries and paved the way for ground-breaking educational reforms. In 1896, John W. Burgess and Nicholas Murray Butler gave a shot in the arm to the education system, introducing elective courses. What's that, you ask? It just means, picking subjects you fancy... ain't that something!

Hold your horses, we're zipping fast to 1897; the college was quick to morph into Columbia University, spreading its wings further. Spiffy new campus on Morningside Heights? Check! The grandeur of Low Memorial Library? Double Check!

In 1937, we welcomed a revolutionary undergraduate program, the Columbia Core Curriculum—an academic buffet offering humanities, social sciences, sciences and more. Columbia was changing the game, eh?

Fast forward to 1983, and Columbia shook its "boys only" reputation with the historic decision of co-education. Crazy thought, isn't it? Finally, everyone had the key to Columbia’s academic treasure chest!

From the last quarter of the 20th century till now, Columbia College has been sprinting ahead, introducing iconic academic programs like "Frontiers of Science," and empowering students with a more interdisciplinary and global perspective.

Ay caramba, look at Columbia College now! From a humble schoolhouse to an educational powerhouse, Columbia truly plays in the big leagues. With 27,000 students and a global reputation in tow, this History 101 lesson tells us how a royal acorn turned into a mighty educational oak! Now, doesn’t that make you want to hop on to the Columbia train?
