In the year 1932, an instrumental figure in shaping the course of higher education in the United States was born. This was no ordinary institution; it was christened as Lewis University, a gem created by the collective efforts of the Archdiocese of Chicago and Bishop Bernard J. Scheil. The origin of its name was a tribute to a person of immense generosity - Frank J. Lewis - a philanthropist who successfully financed the erection of the institution’s key structures.
Right from its inception, Lewis University was intended to be unique. A step away from traditional education, this school decided to sway in the direction of aviation technology, a move that set the groundwork for its distinguished Department of Aviation and Transportation Studies today. In 1934, the educational establishment was granted official recognition under the title 'Lewis Holy Name Technical School'.
By then, the reach of the school had spread far and wide. Hence, the next year it rebranded itself to 'Lewis Holy Name School of Aeronautics'. This name is proudly etched in stone on the Philip Lynch Theatre at the Oremus Fine Arts Center, a place pulsating with vibrant student life and activities.
World War II inevitably forced a break in normal classes; the campus was lent to the United States Navy for essential pilot training. Nonetheless, even war couldn't dampen the university's spirit. Towards the end of 1944, regular classes recommenced, and the institute made a conscious shift towards a conventional arts and science curriculum.
1949 was a landmark year as it saw the doors of the institution opening for women, further fueling diversity in the academic halls. Three progressive years later, another significant shift in identity took place - the educational institution was now known as 'Lewis College of Science and Technology'.
Another ten years on, in 1962, the management opted for a concise approach, shortening the name to 'Lewis College'. However, it wasn't until 1973 when the institute gained the honor of being acknowledged as 'Lewis University'.
Fast forward to 2004 and 2005, the university saw an impressive enrollment of over 5,000 eager minds. By 2019, the institution offered over 80 undergraduate courses, a host of expedited degree completion schemes for working professionals, various aviation programmes, and 35 graduate courses - a testament to its expansion and success. Interesting to note, they have even extended their academic reach to Albuquerque, New Mexico.
In 2016, the baton was passed on from James Gaffney, the fervent leader who had served Lewis University for a staggering 28 years as a president, to David J. Livingston. Hailing as the president of Lourdes University in Sylvania, Ohio, Livingston was more than equipped to take the reins.
And thus flows the inspiring tale of Lewis University, a beacon that has been radiating the light of knowledge, innovation, and progress for close to nine decades.
