Imagine yourself being transported back to 1991, landing in a humble classroom nestled in the heart of Hsi Lai Temple, the North American headquarters of the noble Fo Guang Shan order. This is where our story begins. This unassuming space served as the birthplace of the institution we now proudly know as the University of the West, previously known as Hsi Lai University - 'the University of the West' translated in Chinese.
The journey wasn't easy, the beginning modest. The first semester saw the presence of a modest group of around 30 students, mainly monks and nuns from the temple, learning from only four professors. These original scholars, namely Roger Schmidt, Dan Lusthaus, Jim Santucci, who now serves as the chair of the Department of Comparative Religion at California State University, and Lewis Lancaster, a renowned Western scholar of Buddhism, have all returned to contribute to the University in various roles over the years.
In 1996, the landscape changed dramatically. Fo Guang Shan managed to purchase a property situated at 1409 Walnut Grove Ave., in multicultural Rosemead, California, ten miles east of bustling downtown Los Angeles. This piece of land was previously owned by Biola University and used as a seminary school. But, there was a twist in the tale!
Although transaction seemed straightforward, it was anything but that! Jim Chen, a UWest professor of accounting, recalls the reluctance of the Evangelical Christian-based Biola organization to sell their property to a Buddhist organization. Nevertheless, through diligent negotiation, the property was successfully acquired.
Despite the successful acquisition of the property, UWest dream of recognition and credibility was still alive. A conviction led them into pursuing accreditation and expanding their programs. Fields of study including business, English, psychology, philosophy, Chinese language, Buddhist chaplaincy, and religious studies were introduced while maintaining English as a Second Language program to better serve their international students. Though the degree programs in history, philosophy, Chinese language, and Buddhist studies are no longer offered, they're still accredited and could be revisited in the future.
The tedious accreditation process spanned ten long years. Former dean of academic affairs and renowned Buddhist scholar, Ananda Guruge, championed the process which finally earned them WASC recognition in February 2006. The university, shortly after didn't rest; the time had come to draw American students to the campus. By 2014, approximately 40% of the student body comprised American citizens or permanent residents.
The dynamic journey of the University of the West has been in safe hands, thanks to the 15-member strong board of trustees. They have been contributing significantly to functions like selecting the president, overseeing faculty and staff appointments, managing the budget, supervising the endowment, and protecting university property, shaping the university's future.
Currently, the esteemed Minh-Hoa Ta, shoulders the responsibility of being the president of University of the West, a position that involved immense dedication and hard work. The university has a long list of Presidents who, in the past, have contributed towards its growth and success.
