Now here's the kicker, it appeared on the scene as a no-frills, straight laced training school for teachers, of all things, originally known as Minns' Evening Normal School. But boy oh boy, it's come a long way since then!
A bloke named Frederick F. Minns, an innovator and education-pro was the brains and the brawn behind it all. Yeah, you heard it right. He managed to drum up support from the bigwigs of the California legislature, and in 1862, they passed the whopping Act to Provide for a Normal School. Now doesn't that sound grand?
Fast forward to 1870, this small school's got some wings and, voila, changed its name to the San Jose State Normal School. That ain't all, it even moved to, now humor me here, a fast food joint! Yeah, laugh all ya want, but back then, it was a piece of work - a two-story wooden building encompassing 10 whopping rooms!
