Step back with me to early 19th-century America, when an intrepid explorer named George Champlin Sibley, along with his educator wife, Mary Easton Sibley, laid the foundation for what today stands as the prestigious Lindenwood University. It all started in 1808, when Sibley's friend Frederick Bates promoted him to become the chief factor at Fort Osage in Missouri, near Kansas city.
While stationed at this fort, Sibley made significant strides establishing amicable relationships with the local Osage tribes. During this time, he also crossed paths with Mary Easton, daughter of the esteemed attorney Rufus Easton. After tying the knot in 1815, the couple continued to reside at the fort, where Mary began teaching children, leaving an indelible mark on their lives.
Fast-forward to 1813, Sibley opened a temporary trading post known as Fort Sibley, in present-day Arrow Rock, Missouri. Although the trading post drew its last breath in 1822, the couple continued living in Fort Osage. When their time at the fort concluded in 1825, they relocated to St. Charles, where Mary expanded her teaching to community women, thereby sowing the seeds of a future institution.
Laying the groundwork for Lindenwood University, the couple purchased a 280-acre land dotted with linden trees in 1829. Named "Linden Wood," the Sibleys undertook immense efforts to clear the land and convert their property into a functional farm. As they progressed with their labor of love, the idea of opening a boarding school surfaced.
Within a year of the couple's move to the Linden Wood property in 1829, Mary welcomed her first student, her 12-year-old sister. By 1832, the Sibleys decided to expand the humble Linden Wood cabin to cater to more than a dozen paying students. The school went by the name 'The Boarding School for Young Ladies at Linden Wood, Missouri' during the 1830s, with Mary at the helm, steering the curriculum.
The boarding school curriculum included rigorous literature, grammar, writing, spelling, and diction classes. Those willing to pay an extra fee could also learn French, music and piano, painting, and needlework. The school further distinguished itself by being one of the first to mandate physical education activities such as dancing and walking.
As the boarding school witnessed an increase in enrollment during the 1840s, the Sibleys extended the cabin and made several improvements to the facility. To tide over the financial strain, Mary Sibley even traveled to the East Coast to attract additional funding.
