Let me take you back to the 19th century, on August 10, 1881, where our story begins. A distinguished figure, Edmund F. Dunne, a former chief justice of the Arizona Territory, takes over a humongous 100,000 acres of land in sun-kissed Florida. He breathed life into a Roman Catholic colony in the modern-day city of San Antonio and the town of St. Leo. With diversity and inclusion in mind, Edmund considered the German-speaking colonists and sought help from Bishop John Moore of the Diocese of St. Augustine. A request for a German-speaking priest was made, and thus, Benedictine monks made their first footprints in the area.
This multicultural tapestry didn't stop there. In 1888, the reins of Edmund's hard work were passed onto Mary Help of Christians Abbey, also referred to as Maryhelp, based in Belmont, North Carolina. This change was brought forward by none other than Saint Vincent Archabbey, located in Latrobe, Pennsylvania.
The beginnings of a grand educational institution were set into motion when Edmund gifted 36 acres on Lake Jovita to Abbot Leo Haid, OSB of Maryhelp Abbey in 1889. That same year, in February, Benedictine nuns arrived from Allegheny, Pennsylvania. Come March 11, 1889, they went on to establish the Holy Name Monastery.
The roots of Saint Leo College and Saint Leo Abbey began to strengthen on June 4, 1889. A glimpse of institutional life was first experienced on September 14, 1890, when its doors were opened. The first whiff of student life featured a vibrant 12-year-old boy among the six other students. As the institution flexed its educational prowess, the student body expanded to 32 for the 1890–1891 school year. In June 1893, five determined students walked out with Master of Accounts degrees under their belts.
Bending the laws of the time, in 1898, Saint Leo opened its doors to Rudolph Antorcha, a black student from Cuba. This act of inclusivity was celebrated with a sculpture titled A Spirit of Belonging, dedicated at University Campus in 2013.
The institution proudly stood through many name variations: Saint Leo's College, Saint Leo Military College, Saint Leo College Preparatory School, Saint Leo College High School, St. Leo Academy, Benedictine High School, Saint Leo College Preparatory School, and Saint Leo College, before finally settling as Saint Leo University in 1999. Each name change symbolises a shift in focus and growth in ethos.
A wing of this institution, the Saint Leo College Preparatory School, functioned from 1929 to 1964. Also, in 1959, Saint Leo dived back into its roots and founded a junior college. The first batch of graduates from this set-up received their associate degrees in 1961. The hard-working monks managed both the institutions until 1964.
In 1999, a dash of nostalgia was sprinkled when Saint Leo athletic teams reinstated their original name – the Lions. Years later, in 2011, Saint Leo University created Fritz, an anthropomorphic lion mascot. Fritz, the name, is a hat-tip to a series of Saint Bernard dogs owned by Father Charles Mohr, the first abbot of Saint Leo Abbey from 1902 to 1931.
Another significant milestone was reached on April 23, 1967, when Saint Leo College conferred its first bachelor's degree to 51 men and 13 women. Not long after, in November the same year, the college received accreditation from the Southern Educational Association.
Bridging gaps in education, Saint Leo began offering degree programs on U.S. military bases in 1973. The Center for Online Learning was established in 1998, a testament to adaptive learning methods and enhanced reach.
In 2021, plans were unveiled for a merger with Marymount California University. However, the merger hit a roadblock when St. Leo University's accreditor rejected its plans to acquire Marymount. The downturn led to Marymount's shutdown in August 2022. This unfortunate course of events led to significant cuts and closures at St. Leo University due to dwindling enrollments and financial issues.
Regardless of the challenges faced, the journey from 1959 to the present day has proven to be a testament to Saint Leo's resilience. Since the foundation of the junior college, Saint Leo University has been guided by the wisdom and leadership of 11 revered presidents.
