In the heart of South St. Louis, Missouri, USA, nestled in the neighbourhood of Mount Pleasant, an inspiring tale of academic vision and social commitment unfolded back in 1872. Society of the Sacred Heart, a reputable congregation of Catholic priests and brothers, envisaged a unique educational institution. What was originally called Maryville Academy of the Sacred Heart was born out of this vision. But it was no ordinary academy- it promised to be an oasis of knowledge and opportunity for underprivileged youths and young women.
Occupying a 21-acre tract at 2900 Meramec Avenue, the academy established its presence with an imposing five-story main administration building. The crown jewel of this landmark architectural marvel was an eye-catching cupola strategically positioned in the center. The humble beginnings of what we now know as Maryville University were thus marked.
A significant transformation took place in 1921 when Maryville Academy upped the stakes by becoming a junior college. Not just that, it developed further into a four-year college by 1923. Along with this momentous jump came a change in the name – now it was the Maryville College of the Sacred Heart.
As the 1950s drew to a close, Maryville College made another strategic move – purchasing 290 acres of land adjacent to the key artery of Interstate 64. This purchase planned the seeds for a transformative growth in the 1960s. The era witnessed the college inaugurating a completely new campus on the newly acquired land in 1961, marking the start of its evolution into a community-oriented liberal arts institution.
Fast forward to 1968, inclusion became the buzzword as Maryville College opened its doors to males, thus becoming a co-educational institution. The centennial celebrations of 1972 were not just about reminiscing the past but setting new standards for the future. It was in this year that the ownership of the college was transferred to a lay board of trustees. Further pushing the envelope, Maryville launched a unique Weekend College in 1981, creating opportunities for working adults in the St. Louis area to complete their degrees over the weekend.
The big leap from a college to a university was made fairly recently, in 1991. June of that year saw Maryville`s transformation to university status. Meanwhile, the old campus found a new purpose – it became the Augustinian Academy for Boys, which sadly closed its doors in 1972. Tragedy struck the year following when a fire led to the destruction of Duchesne Hall – the area was later turned into a post office branch and the remaining buildings were converted into an apartment complex.
Growth and development continued at an unabated pace at the new West County Main Campus. Initiatives were launched and structures were erected to aid the growth. 1988 saw the dedication of the University Library. Under the leadership of President Keith Lovin, a wave of construction began in 1997, featuring the opening of an Art & Design Building. Housing amenities too were not overlooked – the new apartment-style dormitories were opened in 2003, an additional apartment building was completed in 2006, and Potter Hall (a Marriott Corporation acquisition) was dedicated to students in 2010. Prioritizing health sciences, the university inaugurated Walker Hall in 2015, which now houses the College of Health Professions and the Catherine McAuley School of Nursing. Just a year later, in 2016, another new residence hall marked its presence.
Maryville University entered the new decade armed with an exceptional achievement - it was recognized as the "2nd fastest-growing" private university in the nation by The Chronicle of Higher Education in 2020. Though it had to close its Weekend and Evening College centers, the university's main spirit perseveres. Today, Maryville University stands as a shining beacon of academic excellence and community service in the inspiring journey it began in 1872.
