Founded by the visionary Bishop Louis William Valentine DuBourg on November 16, 1818, Saint Louis University has a rich history interlaced with numerous transformative episodes. The story begins humbly with the Saint Louis Academy, rooted in a private residence at the heart of the city, near the Mississippi River. While the beginning was modest, the founders were far from ordinary. Armed with remarkable zeal and dedication, the Reverend François Niel and other secular clergy members shaped the academy's early years.
The academy was scarcely two years old when the founders decided it was time to grow. Thus, the Saint Louis Academy evolved into the Saint Louis College in 1820, using Bishop Dubourg’s astonishing personal library of 8,000 volumes. Presently, the element of this establishment, the secondary school division, continues as the Saint Louis University High School.
In the year 1827, the management of the college was entrusted to The Society of Jesus by Bishop Dubourg, a pivotal move in the university's development. With the inflow of the Jesuits, the college was unstoppable, receiving university status, as ordained by the act of the Missouri Legislature not long after.
Fast-forward to 1829, an extensive change reverberated through the halls of the institution. Moved to Washington Avenue and Ninth, the site of the distinguished America's Center today. However, it is significant to acknowledge a darker part of history — the enslaved Black Americans from St. Stanislaus Seminary were compelled to work for the university.
Yet, the university blossomed against all odds. It purchased "Lindell's Grove", currently known as Midtown, in 1867, just years after America’s violent Civil War. The happening spot of the infamous Camp Jackson Affair, it later became the site of the university's current north campus.
Saint Louis University possesses a penchant for setting precedents. During the 1940s, the institution became the beacon of change in the face of segregation, opening its doors to African-American students after a long, tough fight led by Fr. Claude Heithaus in 1944.
In 1967, the university further broke barriers by being among the first Catholic universities to grant laypeople more power. This significant shift saw the majority of laypeople on the board, with Daniel Schlafly stepping in to replace Board chairman Paul Reinert.
The legacy of the Bush family also comprises a part of the university's history. William H. T. Bush, younger brother of former president George H. W. Bush, chaired the Board of Trustees from 1985 to 1992 and even taught classes at the school.
Saint Louis University has always been in tune with dynamic societal shifts. Despite facing resistance, the university sold its hospital to Tenet Healthcare in 1997 and successfully transitioned it to the Catholic SSM Health system by 2015, which also took over SLUCare, the university’s medical practice, seven years later.
In the spirit of acknowledging, learning, and growing from the past, the university disclosed the names and stories of Black Americans, whose blood and sweat were instrumental in the university's early days. The commitment was further deepened in 2022 with the marking of Louis Chauvin and Sylvester Chauvin's burial site through the Negro Leagues Baseball Grave Marker Project.
Today, Saint Louis University is a vibrant institution with 40 Jesuits committed to teaching, studying, and ministering. The university's rich history serves as a testament to its core vision and values, transforming and driving it forward each day.
