Imagine stepping back in time to October 22, 1840. A courageous woman named Saint Mother Theodore Guerin and her five fellow Sisters of Providence have just completed an arduous three-month journey from Ruillé-sur-Loir, France. Their mission? To fulfil a request from the Bishop of Vincennes to establish an educational institute for young women in Indiana.
Interestingly, Mother Theodore hadn't been the first choice for this task. Despite her well-earned reputation as a remarkably gifted educator, she felt unworthy. It was only persuasion from her superiors that finally convinced her to accept this significant task. Her outstanding contribution was internationally recognized when she was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI on October 15, 2006, making her Indiana's first saint.
Fast forward to 1846 and we find Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) becoming the first in the state to receive a charter for the advanced education of women. The college grew steadily and in 1899, began confering Bachelor of Arts degrees. In fact, SMWC was a pioneer in women's education, offering the first journalism courses and degrees in secondary education, home economics, and secretarial science for women. As women's career opportunities expanded, the college followed suit offering programs in fields such as business, computer information systems, equine studies, psychology and nursing.
Offerings then expanded to over 30 undergraduate majors, available both on campus and online. In an important decision on May 1, 2015, the trustees voted unanimously to become fully coeducational. This was a momentous shift, echoing the progressive development of society and education.
Not only was SMWC a pioneer in women's education, but it also led the way in distance education. In 1973, they introduced one of the first independent study programs in the nation, the Women's External Degree (WED) program. Adapting to changing times and needs, this program catered to adult women juggling family and job responsibilities. In 2005, the doors of this program were opened to men, aligning with the college’s mission of advancing women’s education.
Under the renamed title, Woods Online, both women and men across the globe have access to a wide variety of majors today. In fact, in 2012, the Indianapolis Business Journal acknowledged SMWC for having one of Indiana's largest online degree programs, boasting of over 800 students enrolled from 33 states and countries as diverse as England, Greece, Hong Kong, and Jamaica. By 2015, all programs had been opened up to both sexes.
SMWC also began to offer master's degree programs in a hybrid format. The first was the Master of Arts in Art Therapy (MAAT), launched in 2000. Catering to those looking to use or plan to use art in therapy, the program was a mark of innovative thinking. In similar vein, the Master of Arts in Music Therapy (MAMT) catered to music therapists seeking advanced understanding of therapeutic uses of music. In 2007, the Master of Leadership Development (MLD) program was introduced, extending the college’s range of offering.
