History Roanoke College

Have you ever imagined the founding of a school? Well, picture the arduous journey two Lutheran pastors, David F. Bittle and Christopher C. Baughmann, embarked upon to establish a boys' preparatory school. Initially located near Staunton, in Augusta County, it wore the proud title of Virginia Institute. This name prevailed until January 30, 1845, when the school was granted the status of Virginia Collegiate Institute.

The plot thickens in 1847, when the blossoming commercial hub of Salem became their new home. One can imagine the covered wagon, laden with all the school's possessions, trundling along the old roads. It was this relocation that led to the institute’s name change. On March 14, 1853, the Virginia General Assembly approved the name Roanoke College, chosen to honor the Roanoke Valley. Bittle, performing his first act as the newly instated president, took the helm.

One can't narrate the tale of an American college without it being touched by the Civil War, isn’t it? Roanoke College was unique due to its academic persistence, remaining open throughout the span of the bloody conflict. The students weren't just scholars. They formed a corps of cadets and stood bravely against the Confederate forces near Salem in December 1863. However, these brave boys were outmatched, but were paroled by the Union commander, allowing them to return to their studies. On September 1, 1864, they officially mustered into the Confederate Army, Virginia Reserves. Fortunately, they didn’t have to endure the experience of combat before the war ended.

Diversity wasn’t alien to these academics. Towards the end of the 19th century, Roanoke College enrolled its first international students, making history with the first Mexican student in 1876 and the first Japanese student in 1888. As early as 1898, Surh Beung Kiu, the first Korean to graduate from an American college or university, marked another milestone for Roanoke.

In 1930, Roanoke College broke the gender barrier and became coeducational, earlier having hosted a small number of non-degree-seeking women from Elizabeth College in Salem. Tragically razed by fire in 1921, Roanoke College provided refuge for the female students from its sister Lutheran college, formerly known as Roanoke Women's College, to finish their academic year.

Roanoke continued its endeavor for women’s education by opening Smith Hall, their first women's residence, in 1941. Smith Hall became a prominent part of the John R. Turbyfill Front Quad. Further, Roanoke retained the now-defunct Roanoke Women's College campus as its Elizabeth Campus. It became home to residential halls, athletic fields, and the college tennis complex, located about two miles away.

When Marion College, yet another sister Lutheran women's college based in Marion, Virginia, closed in 1967, Roanoke committed to supporting their student population and welcomed the alumnae warmly. As homage, a residence hall built in 1968 was named Marion Hall.

Sports enthusiasts, rejoice! Team Roanoke has a decorated history with two national championships to their name, in men's basketball in 1972 and men's lacrosse in 1978. Not just the teams, individual players made their mark too. In 2001, student Casey Smith clinched an individual championship in the Division III women's 10,000m track and field event, followed by student Robin Yerkes's triumph in the Division III women's 400m track and field event in 2009.

Perhaps the most strenuous decade in the school history came in the '80s and ‘90s when Roanoke College experienced a huge leap in growth. Fundraising campaigns, such as the 1992 Sesquicentennial Campaign and the 2002 Plan, managed to raise over $150 million. These efforts facilitated new additions and renovations of facilities like the library, student center, and the arts and performance center.

A new dawn came with the tenure of Roanoke’s tenth president, and its first female president, Sabine O'Hara in 2004. O’Hara, known for her expertise in sustainable economic development, played a crucial role in the college’s ambitious strategic plan. The subsequent unveiling of "The 2015 Plan" called for extended academic offerings, increased student enrolment, renovated facilities, and enhanced endowment resources. Although O'Hara's tenure was brief, it was one of significant expansion for the college.
