History Salem State University

In 1854, under the stewardship of the visionary Horace Mann, a new institution sprang to life. This was the Salem Normal School, founded with the noble goal of bringing quality teaching education to every corner of the country. Your curiosity might be sparked knowing that it was the fourth normal school in Massachusetts and the tenth in the United States. Originally housed at 1 Broad Street, a generous endowment from the City of Salem, this institution began as a 2-year, post-secondary educational retreat exclusively for female students.

Gradually, the Salem Normal School began impacting communities far beyond Salem. Consider the example of Charlotte Forten, a proud alumna from the class of 1856. She made history as the first African-American school teacher to journey south and educate freed slaves. Other alumnae taught in remote parts of Africa, Asia and the Middle East, demonstrating the global reach of this humble institution. With the escalating demand for educators across the nation, the Salem Normal School flourished, necessitating a renovation of the original building in 1871.

We welcome you to 1896, when the school moved to its present location in South Salem into a structure now known as the Sullivan Building on North Campus. A few years passed and right next door, the Horace Mann Laboratory School opened its doors. Not too long after this, in 1898, the institute embraced co-education, though it would be another decade before a significant rise in male enrollment, propelled by a commercial program introduced in 1908.

Fast forward to 1921, when the school decided to offer four-year degree programs. This change also came with a new name - Salem Teachers College - which was given in 1932. The progression continued, as the School began granting master’s degrees (M.Ed) in 1955, with the first degrees awarded two years later, in 1957. The aftermath of World War II and the implementation of the G.I. Bill saw an extensive increase in enrollment, especially among male students, necessitating the introduction of new academic programs.

Transition to 1960, and the school took on another new identity as Salem State College, with authorization to offer diverse bachelor's degrees in liberal arts and Business. The campus underwent massive development in the 1960s, thanks to the dynamic leadership of President Frederick Meier. The 70s saw further physical expansion, with the creation of additional facilities, including the O’Keefe Athletic Center and a new library, along with the acquisition of land for the now South Campus.

If you take a journey to the mid-1990s, you would see the college procuring a 37.5-acre industrial site on Loring Avenue. Formerly home to a lightbulb factory owned by the General Telephone & Electronics Corporation, this site is presently known as Central Campus, where the Bertolon School of Business and three student residences - Viking Hall, Marsh Hall and Atlantic Hall - stand proudly.

Fast forward to July 26, 2010, when the institution was elevated to university status, courtesy of a new law signed by Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick. Salem State College now officially turned into Salem State University. More recently, in September 2021, Central Campus was renamed to Harrington Campus paying tribute to President Nancy Harrington. These time-traveling tales of Salem State University reveal an illustrious journey, of an institute focused on continuous progression, inclusivity, and global impact.
