History Willamette University

Back in 1834, the scenic land now known as Willamette University was simply part of Oregon Country. In this expanse of uncharted territory, missionary Jason Lee rooted a firm commitment to education. His vision, the Indian Manual Labor Institute, aimed to enlighten the local Native Americans. From this vision emerged the Oregon Institute, founded by Lee with aid from 53 enthusiastic volunteers who had arrived aboard the Lausanne. Born from a series of contemplative meetings, the institute came to life officially on February 1, 1842.

The early days were humble, with a community of five eager students nurtured by one devoted teacher, Mrs. Chloe Clarke Willson. Supported by a board of trustees chaired first by Jason Lee, and then by David Leslie upon Lee's demiset in 1845. The crux of their mission remained enlightening the children of the missionaries themselves.

By 1844, the original establishment was ready – a three-story marvel, squarely rivalling the largest constructions in the Pacific Northwest. Time elapsed and this educational beacon hosted the first state legislature of Salem, post the shifting of the capital in 1851. Unfortunately, an unsuspected fire resulted in the loss of this venerable building in 1872.

Persevering, the community finished construction of a new brick building in 1867, christened as the University Hall. To today's date, the building now known as Waller Hall is a tribute to Reverend Alvin F. Waller and is the oldest standing university building west of the Mississippi River.

The institution wore many hats. In 1852, it transformed to Wallamet University, receiving its charter the following year. The first graduate, Emily J. York, proudly held her degree as Mistress of English Literature in 1859. It became the foundation of the first medical school in the Pacific Northwest in 1866. The reins of the university were held by Francis S. Hoyt initially and then passed to Thomas Milton Gatch during this remarkable reformation.

The university was spelled ‘Willamette’ since 1870, entering an exciting new phase in 1883. Under the leadership of Thomas Van Scoy, it became the first law school in the Pacific Northwest. Its medical school eventually merged with the University of Oregon in 1913, forming the now Oregon Health and Science University.

The ecumenical institute saw its football team in Hawaii facing the University of Hawaii in 1941. The students and the team woke up to the unfortunate bombing of Pearl Harbor a day after, disrupting the return trip. A testament to their spirit, some students assisted in tending the wounded back to the mainland, while others found solace with local gridiron mates at the Punahou School.

Throughout the turbulent World War II, Willamette marked its name among 131 universities nationally participating in the V-12 Navy College Training Program for Navy commission aspirants. The Lausanne Hall stood as a beacon of their commitment.

Befriending Tokyo International University marked 1965, culminating into a new campus on Willamette's grounds in 1989. In another historic moment, class of '99 student Elizabeth Heaston became the first woman to participate in a collegiate football game in 1997. More accolades followed as the university broke the world record for the largest game of Red Light/Green Light, not once but twice - in 2013 and 2015 with, 1,060 and 1,203 players respectively.

From a humble yet passionate beginning, to a university that consistently redefines its boundaries, the history of Willamette University inspires one and all. The spirit of education and resilience that heralded its inception still lingers on every corner, echoing stories of challenges triumphed and records shattered. Interested in being part of such a historic journey? Willamette University awaits you.
