Back in the day, specifically on September 7, 1925, Maryland State Normal School was born, taking baby steps as a two-year institution. Would you believe, it was their responsibility to nurture and produce inspirational elementary school teachers to sort out the alarming teacher shortage in Maryland? To give an overview, the first 105 students were warmly welcomed by the first president, William J. Holloway – a man with an unyielding passion for education, and might I say, the mastermind behind the conception of the school.
Do you know the curriculum? Well, it was wholly influenced by the established programme at Columbia's Teachers College, interesting isn't it? This is where six of Salisbury Normal School's eight initial faculty originated from. A sudden shift happened during the Great Depression, the dark clouds forced Maryland to stretch the study course at the normal schools from two to three years, soon making it four years in 1934.
This, I must tell you, paved the perfect path for the institution to rejuvenate as a teachers' college the following year. Maryland State Teachers College, a wonderful name, isn't it? That was the new name adopted by the institution in the year 1935. Progressing with leaps and bounds, it later transformed into Salisbury State College in the year of 1963.
Between the years of 1962 and 1995, there were some vital changes. The college saw the approval of several master's degree programs. Waving off the old tag, Salisbury State College embraced the title of Salisbury State University in the year 1988. Time kept rolling, and with the dawn of 2001, the institution was christened Salisbury University.
From the early 2000s, Salisbury University embraced exponential growth academically and in terms of the campus facilities. Ringing in the time after 2002, the college saw the construction of Henson Hall, Conway Hall, Perdue Hall, the Patricia R. Guerri Academic Commons, and Sea Gull Stadium.
With the arrival of University President Janet Dudley-Eshbach, in 2000, Salisbury University's momentum went off the charts! The campus expanded, with eye-popping $350 million new facilities. Student enrollment saw an exponential rise, growing by over 2,000. And the first doctorate programs in nursing practice and education were curated.
Life at Salisbury University unfolded a new chapter from July 1, 2018, until July 14, 2022, with president Charles "Chuck" Wight at the helm. He succeeded Dudley-Eshbach, who after a remarkable 18 years at SU's presidential position, returned to her first love – teaching foreign languages at SU. On a year's hiatus, while she instructed Wight. It was on July 15, 2022, that Carolyn Ringer Lepre, Ph.D. embarked upon her tenure as the 10th president of Salisbury University.
The year 2019 brought about unfortunate episodes of racial vandalism at the university. The students, passionate advocates for safety and inclusivity, stood steadfast, voicing their concerns over these incidents. Following a third appalling incident in 2020, a Day of Healing was declared by the university president. The plot thickened when it was revealed that Jerome K. Jackson, an African American man, was behind these deeds.
