As you embark on this journey into the past, let's pivot the hands of time back to 1847. Shortly after the arrival of Mormon pioneers in the serene Salt Lake valley, an intriguing tale begins to unfurl. The name Brigham Young may ring a bell, the man who kick-started the first seeds of what we know as the University of Utah today. He gathered a dynamic Board of Regents, their mission? The establishment of a university. The green flag was hoisted on February 28, 1850, as the University of Deseret made its humble debut in the provisional State of Deseret.
Orson Spencer, the first ever chancellor, held the helm of this ship. Learning flourished in unconventional classrooms that ranged from private homes to borrowed spaces. Unfortunately, this illustrious establishment was hit by a turbulent storm in 1853. A lack of funds and paucity of supporting colleges led to its temporary closure.
Like a Phoenix from the ashes, the university resumed its pursuit of excellence in 1867. Credited for its revival are David O. Calder followed by John R. Park. Relocating to Union Academy building in 1876, and then finally settling into Union Square in 1884, the university started on a path of countless triumphs. A major landmark in history was 1892, when it was re-christened as the University of Utah. Significantly, John R. Park secured a sizeable chunk of land, formerly under the U.S. Army's Fort Douglas, that became the university's permanent home in 1900.
The University of Utah encountered a spell of rapid growth in the early 20th century. However, it was not without its share of challenges. In 1915, a contentious issue revolving around academic freedom erupted. Joseph T. Kingsbury, suggested the dismissal of five faculty members following a controversial graduation speech. Consequently, a third of the faculty departed in protest. Mysteries continue to cloud the underlying reasons – some attributed it to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' influence, while others saw it as an attempt to repress potentially offensive religious and political expression. The storm finally ceased when Kingsbury stepped down next year.
Successive world wars and the Great Depression severely affected the university's functioning. By the end of World War II, student enrollment had plunged to a scarce 3,418. Things took a turn for the better under A. Ray Olpin, who ushered in a new era after the war. By his retirement in 1964, the university's growth skyrocketed with the student number soaring to 12,000.
Let's fast forward to 2002, as the university played host to the Winter Olympics. Housing athletes, and staging the opening and closing ceremonies, the University of Utah became a beacon of international attention. An impressive selection of improvements were undertaken, including extensive renovations to the Rice-Eccles Stadium.
In 2014, the University threw open its doors to an international audience by launching the University of Utah Asia Campus in Songdo, Incheon, South Korea. It joined forces with three other leading American and European Universities to further global education, thanks to funding from the South Korean government.
The University's global interventions extend to Ghana. In 2015, it collaborated to launch the Ensign College of Public Health in Kpong. It's latest feather in the cap was added in 2019, when the University received the honor of being christened a member of the Association of American Universities.
So, there you have it - a journey through time, charting the growth and evolution of a beloved educational institution. A testament to a doctrine that envisions globally accessible education and sets the benchmark for academic freedom. The University of Utah is a testament to the indomitable spirit of those who dared to dream.
