Picture this: the year is 1869 in Tehuacana, Texas. A group of visionaries from the Cumberland Presbyterians decides to take the scattered remnants of three small colleges that had suffered drastically due to the Civil War and build something new. The colleges were Chapel Hill College (1849), Ewing College (1848), and Larissa College (1855). One among them was John Boyd, who had stints in the Congress of the Republic of Texas (1836-1845) and the Texas Senate (1862-1863). He generously donated 1,100 acres of land and finances to breathe life into the new establishment, which we know today as Trinity University.
Jumping forward to 1902, the university makes a strategic move to Waxahachie, Texas, hoping to thrive with the support of a larger community. Four years later, the university joins forces with the United Presbyterian Church along with numerous Cumberland Presbyterian churches. But fate had a twisted turn in store when the Stock Market Crash of 1929 wreaked havoc on the University's growth.
Students stopped enrolling, faculty left, and the endowment funds meant for future development had to be used for daily operations. Things got so bad that Trinity's accreditation status was put on probation in 1936.
But who said this was the end of Trinity? In 1942, the University of San Antonio, affiliated with the Methodist, was having its own hardships. Seeing this as an opportunity, the leaders of San Antonio approached Trinity with a relocation offer. Trinity gladly accepted, moving from Waxahachie to San Antonio and inheriting the campus and alumni of the University of San Antonio.
Make no mistake; the transition period was challenging. The university had to use military barracks and quonset huts for housing students and conducting classes due to a lack of adequate infrastructure. But fortunes smiled when in 1945, Trinity bought a limestone quarry to build a state-of-the-art campus.
Fast forward to 1952; Trinity unveiled its new campus filled with modern structures and grandeur. The visionary at that time, James W. Laurie, Trinity's 14th president, capitalized on the location advantage of the rapidly growing San Antonio city and lifted the university's academic stature.
Through his tireless efforts and the help of the generous James A. and Leta M. Chapman Charitable Trust of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Trinity could expand the quality and range of its faculty while maintaining a high faculty-to-student ratio.
Post-1969, Trinity transitioned into a private, independent entity with a self-perpetuating board of trustees, and still maintaining historical connections, thanks to a covenant agreement with the regional synod of the Presbyterian Church (USA).
Then came the era of Ronald Calgaard who reshaped Trinity by making it a residential undergraduate school, refining the student population, enhancing merit scholarships, national student recruitment, and hosting a series of cultural events.
Calgaard's successor, John R. Brazil, focused on updating the campus infrastructure and finance. His legacy includes a successful "Campaign for Trinity University," which raised a whopping $205.9 million, surpassing the initial target of $200 million.
From 2010 to 2015, President Dennis A. Ahlburg led a future-shaping strategic plan that strengthened the university's academic offerings and national reputation. It included the construction of the Center for Sciences and Innovation, promoting interdisciplinary collaboration.
Danny J. Anderson took the reins in May 2015, serving until May 31, 2022, and brought forth improvements like the creation of Dicke Hall for Humanities studies, a modernized Halsell Center learning environment, and the Michael Neidorff School of Business.
Finally, on May 31, 2022, Trinity entered a new era of leadership under Vanessa Beasley, the first female to lead the University. Trinity University's dynamic history is intertwined with resilience, visionary leadership, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. Trinity believes that the best chapters of its story are yet to be written. Perhaps you'll be a part of it!
