Picture this, the year was 1869, and the city of San Antonio was in the throes of a deadly cholera outbreak. It was then, that the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word heeded the call of Bishop Claude M. Dubuis and journeyed from Galveston to lend a helping hand. Sisters Madeleine Chollet, Pierre Cinquin, and Agnes Buisson, against odds, made the trip only to find their intended dwelling consumed by fire. Luckily, the compassionate Ursuline Sisters offered them shelter.
Undeterred, these determined sisters soon built a combined convent and hospital to serve the needs of the time. December 1 marked the opening of the city's first hospital, named Santa Rosa Infirmary. Their services weren't simply restricted to medical aid. Recognizing the need for childcare in Texas, they built St. Joseph's Orphanage for Girls and St. John's Orphanage for Boys in 1874.
The conception of the Incarnate Word School, as it was known then, took place in 1881. Back in the day, it was primarily an institution intended for the education of women. The Academy of the Incarnate Word came into existence in 1900, eventually shifting to the Motherhouse of the Sisters of Charity.
As the years rolled on, in 1909, college classes were incorporated into the curriculum. A significant change came about in 1971 when UIW opened its gates to male students and began on-campus housing for men. The nursing school, which was once an all-female domain, underwent transformation.
1989 brought about the establishment of the Brainpower Connection program. A holistic educational stream guiding students from the Pre-K stage through to Ph.D. This program incorporated several schools including St. Anthony Catholic High School, Incarnate Word High School, and more.
1995 was a year of expansion for the university with the Adult Degree Completion Program (ADCaP) designed to aid adult learners juggling work and studies. The international footprint extended, with UIW managing St. Anthony's Catholic High School. By 1996, the school proudly wore its new name – The University of the Incarnate Word.
The University of the Incarnate Word achieved another milestone when it got the green light from the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to offer doctoral degrees in 1998. By 2000, the China Incarnate Word Education Center was functioning full swing in Guangzhou, China, in collaboration with South China Normal University.
The year 2008 marked the advent of a new era as the UIW Cardinals, the university’s football team, was formed. Playing their home games in the Tom and Gayle Benson stadium, they are a testament to the spirit of sportsmanship.
However, the history of UIW is not without its dark moments. December 2013 saw the unfortunate incident where a university policeman shot Cameron Redus, a UIW student. His parents went on to file a lawsuit against UIW, and the case is ongoing.
Facing harsh criticism, UIW President Louis Agnese Jr. was removed from his position in 2016 due to racially offensive remarks. He was succeeded by Thomas Evans. A year later in 2017, UIW School of Osteopathic Medicine welcomed its first batch of 150 learners at their newly opened Southside campus.
Through it all, the University of the Incarnate Word continues to make significant strides in imparting education and fostering a humanitarian spirit in each of its students, staying true to its roots laid down by the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word.
