Once upon a time, back in the year 2001, two reputable institutions, the California School of Professional Psychology (CSPP) and the United States International University (USIU), fused into one. They birthed what we know today as Alliant International University, continuing its noble academic lineage in its home base, sunny San Diego, California.
Rewind the time to the 1900s. A key figure to remember—Leland Ghent Stanford, the founder of the original Balboa School of Law. Stanford, in 1924, laid the cornerstone of a private graduate institution which had its name changed over the years. It transformed into Balboa University and later, settled for California Western University in 1952. With the new identity, the school gravitated towards the oceanic serenity of Point Loma, the site that today houses Point Loma Nazarene University.
1968 stood as a watershed year for the institution. Donning a new name, the United States International University, it dreamt of becoming a worldwide university. It procured land in Scripps Ranch that turned into its new campus by 1973. However, the law school stuck to its roots by retaining the name of California Western School of Law and settled into a novel downtown location. Five years later in 1975, it branched out to function as an independent institution, where it operates to this day.
Time to introduce another crucial character in our story- William C. Rust. He served as the president of California Western University and played a significant role in its metamorphosis into USIU. He held the reins of the school for a lengthy duration of 37 years. His vision? To knit the world together through a university with campuses sprinkled across the globe.
Rust harbored a rare perspective for USIU's foundation. Instead of "intellectual excellence," he insisted on the pursuit of "human excellence." By 1971, Rust helped morph the once humble liberal arts school into the international phenomenon, as the San Diego reader fondly called it. From the main campus in Scripps Ranch, USIU, under Rust's leadership, spread tentacles across national territories like Maui, Steamboat Springs, and Guam. It also made its mark internationally, stretching from London to Mexico City, Tokyo, and Nairobi.
Speeding ahead to 1986, Rust continued to break barriers and foster new developments, keeping his gaze fixed on further expansion in Latin America, Middle East, Europe, and Russia. However, as in all great sagas, Rust faced trials. By 1990, after a long, eventful 37-year tenure, he was forced to let go of the governing power by the board of trustees. Gary Hays, former chancellor of Minnesota State University, slipped into Rust's shoes as the president of USIU in April 1990.
A transformation was well underway. Hays orchestrated a reorganization, leading to the emergence of the university's two remaining colleges; arts and sciences, and business administration. In 1999, the Nairobi campus gained independence and operated under the banner of United States International University Africa.
The year 2001 brought significant changes—the merger of the California School of Professional Psychology and United States International University. The product was the birth of Alliant International University who took over the Scripps Ranch campus of USIU. Until February 2015, Alliant remained a non-profit, like its predecessors. Today, it stands proudly as a profitable benefit corporation and a part of the Arist Education System, which is a subsidiary of Bertelsmann.
