History San Diego State University

On a Saturday, the 13th of March, 1897, a new chapter in San Diego's educational journey began. The spark that ignited it was San Diego Normal School, now better known as the prestigious San Diego State University (SDSU). It was not a grand institution in its inception; rather, it was a humble beginning with only seven faculty members and 91 students eager to learn. Its campus spread only seventeen acres on Park Boulevard in University Heights, more recently transformed into the headquarters of the San Diego Unified School District.

It was a time when women across the world were fighting for their right to education, and SDSU lent a supporting hand. The primary mission? Grooming local young ladies to become elementary school teachers. As for the curriculum, it revolved around English, history, and mathematics - a trilogy that captured the essence of those times.

Fast forward to 1923, and the San Diego Normal School was on a new journey. Evolving into San Diego State Teacher's college, it became a beacon of learning under the purview of the California State Board of Education. But even then, it couldn't contain its academic aspirations. By the time the dust settled in the 1930s, the college was bursting at the seams. Ready for growth, it relocated to its present seat atop Montezuma Mesa at the then eastern edge of San Diego in 1931.

In just a few more years, the college broadened its academic canvas yet again. It was 1935, and the school extended its offerings beyond teacher education, gaining a new identity - San Diego State College.

Time flew, and it was the dawn of the 1960s. San Diego State College joined the California State Colleges system, transitioning into the California State University realm by 1972. Two short years later, it christened itself with the name we recognize today - San Diego State University (SDSU).

SDSU has always embraced the spirit of progress. It was here that the then President of the United States, John F. Kennedy, delivered an inspiring commencement speech at a graduation ceremony on June 6, 1963. This historical event further spotlighted the university when it conferred Kennedy with an honorary doctorate degree in law - a first among the California State Colleges.

The university's commitment to equality and progress did not end there. On May 29, 1964, civil rights torchbearer Martin Luther King Jr. took the stage in the Open Air Theater. Baring his vision of the future, he passionately called for the transition of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

The University has been a hub of influential visits over the years. Notably in April 2012, it welcomed the XIV Dalai Lama who preached about his "Compassion Without Borders" tour at the SDSU's Viejas Arena.

In 2017, when the San Diego Chargers relocated to Los Angeles, SDSU made a spirited initiative to take over the Qualcomm Stadium and surrounding city property adjacent to the main campus. The proposal, known as SDSU West, was put to a vote and won approval by a majority 54%. Subsequently, negotiations began for SDSU to purchase the property from the city of San Diego. In May 2020, they reached an agreement for SDSU to buy 135 acres, including the stadium, for a cool $88 million.

And who can ignore the multi-billion dollar SDSU project that began taking shape in 2020? A new 35,000-seat stadium rose from the ground by 2022 - christened as the Snapdragon Stadium, it’s a venue for SDSU football, professional soccer, and other special events. The towering project, totaling a whopping $3.5 billion, also envisages providing housing, office and retail space, hotels, and even 80 acres of park area in the city over a staggering 15 years.

Since its inception, the helm of SDSU has been in the hands of 10 presidents, two serving only temporarily. The tradition of honoring them is evident in several campus structures such as the Hardy Tower, Hepner Hall and the Malcolm A. Love Library, named after these former leaders. The current President Adela de la Torre, the first woman to hold the position permanently, took her position in 2018.

So students, while you embark on the academic journey at SDSU, remember it’s history that has been beautiful woven with the principles of equality, expansion and empowerment!
