As the decade ended in 1951, leadership shifted from Richard S. Stephens to his son, Richard A. Stephens, marking an evolvement in the academy's trajectory.
Fast-forwarding to 1992, an even more profound change occurred when Elisa Stephens, Richard A. Stephen's daughter, ascended to the university's presidency. Under her pioneering leadership, the university flourished, witnessing an astounding surge in the student population that leaped to 18,000 by 2011.
The Academy of Art University isn't just about academics, though. Showcasing its affinity for vintage automobiles through its own automobile museum, the institution has a collection of 200 vintage cars. This beautiful showcasing started in the 1990s and has caught the eye of many car aficionados ever since.
And speaking of showcases, the academy made its unmissable debut at the NY Fashion Week event in 2005. Invited back ever since, they've participated bi-annually, marking their presence in the global arena. However, the path wasn't always adorned with roses. In 2009, a litigation storm hovered when four former admission officers alleged that the university used incentive-based recruitment techniques. The whistle-blowers claimed that their compensation was tied to the number of students they enrolled. This resulted in a lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court in Oakland.
The following year, in May 2016, another wrinkle com’s in the form of the city of San Francisco filing a lawsuit against the university. They had suspicions regarding the institution violating city land-use laws, mainly for converting rent-controlled housing into academic use without authorization. By late December of the same year, the Academy of Art University was instructed to pay the city a substantial $20 million in fees and other housing concessions worth $40 million which included providing affordable housing for seniors.
However, the story doesn't end there. In January 2020, the earlier agreement was revised. The Academy of Art University was now mandated to shell $37.6 million for building affordable housing units. This plot twist added another colorful chapter to the Academy's rich history.
