Do you know the tale of a learning group born out of the literary reading circles of YMCA? That's the story of Golden Gate University, which saw its inception on November 1, 1881, on Sutter Street's YMCA building. The humble beginning was a foray into equipping individuals at a time when college education was a rarity among men. So rare that only one in two thousand men had it! Now, picture that!
But it wasn't even a stand-alone university initially — the institution shared its YMCA roots with a plethora of others like Roosevelt University, Bentley University, and Michigan State University College of Law to name a few.
The first of the offered courses were simple, accessible, and what we'd now term as practical. Subjects like bookkeeping, math, stenography, Spanish, and even gymnastics were taught. Finish these, and you'd earn a certificate worthy of recognition by more than 100 colleges and trade schools. It was versatile education provided even before it was cool!
Not just this, boys could avail themselves of a common school, and in 1894, YMCA shifted to a new, larger building, transitional in the history of what was to later become the esteemed Golden Gate University.
The journey of evolution continued. The night school was dubbed Evening College on October 1, 1896, and soon a law school became part of the curriculum — making it the first of the institution's educational departments pondering a full degree-level course. Therefore, the University attributes its inception to this significant event. By 1908, the institution grew to include courses in accountancy, business administration, and foreign trade.
However, the journey wasn't without trials. The cataclysm of 1906 that destroyed the YMCA building had the school reeling to gather itself and continue imparting knowledge from makeshift tents and leased spaces. But it survived!
Fresh from setback, by November 1910, the school found a new home at Golden Gate Avenue's YMCA building — the very place, the university gets its current name from.
A friendly student contest in 1927 saw a proposal for a significant name change. Charles H. Pool Jr., a law student, suggested "Golden Gate," which seemed to symbolize the captivating charm of California. And so it happened! The following years saw the institution separating from the Central YMCA on May 18, 1923. It was legally recognized as Golden Gate College with powers to confer degrees as per California laws.
By 1962, the college managed to cut ties with YMCA entirely, and by 1968, it moved into the Allyne building, an edifice that was previously the showroom and wholesale department of Sherman Clay, a large retailer of musical instruments.
The journey kept getting bolder and better. The Institution expanded and elevated itself to a university in 1972. Seven years later, the most significant chunk of the classroom space, the "west wing," was added to the university.
