Once upon a time, in the vibrant heart of San Francisco, a one-room schoolhouse laid the foundation for something extraordinary. Back in 1855, Jesuits led by Father Anthony Maraschi, an unequivocal visionary, created what was initially known as St. Ignatius Academy. Maraschi, the first in many roles, ran the academy as president, served as the professor, managed the finances, and was even the first pastor of St. Ignatius Church.
The road to its inception was not an easy one, but come April 30 in 1859, the quiet academy received a charter from the State of California. Signed by Governor John B. Weller, this charter allowed the academy to issue college degrees, propelling it to be known as St. Ignatius College.
The curriculum they offered was rich with diversity. It spanned from the romantic languages like Latin, Greek, French, Italian and Spanish to the sciences, teaching algebra and arithmetic. Furthermore, they also explored the art of eloquent speaking (elocution), and practical life skills like bookkeeping. From the very beginning, they envisaged an all-rounded education, moulding students into more than just book-smart individuals.
As the years rolled on, the college found new homes. The first was a modest structure erected in 1862, replacing the original wooden building on Market Street. Fast forward to 1880; they relocated to the corner of Hayes Street and Van Ness Avenue, where the Davies Symphony Hall currently stands.
In love with change, only half a century later, in 1930, the college took a grand leap, transforming itself from St. Ignatius College to the University of San Francisco (USF). A move fiercely advocated for by the alumni and the then San Francisco Mayor James Rolph Jr.
While the college was initially male-oriented, they took a progressive stride in 1964 by becoming a full-fledged coeducational institution. Yet, their pursuit of inclusivity began much early, in 1927, when they opened evening programmes in law and business for women.
Fast-forwarding a couple of decades, in 1969, they felt the need for a separate high school division. This initiative led to the Weston part of San Francisco welcoming St. Ignatius College Preparatory, which was completely distinct from the university. Following that, in 1978, the University family extended further with the acquisition of Lone Mountain College.
Celebrating its undeterred journey from a one-room academy to a renowned university, they engraved another milestone in their journey in 2005, marking 150 years of unwavering dedication to education. As they reached the fall of 2017, you could easily find over 11,000 eager minds spread across their diverse programs, housed within five distinct schools and one college.
Thus the University of San Francisco saw a journey that started from humble beginnings and now stands as one of the shining beacons of education. Every wall of the university whispers tales of this remarkable evolution, inspiring every student that walks through its corridors. As we delve into this story, we should remember that each paragraph is a chapter in the USF's tale of illustrious growth, something that every aspiring international student should find inspiring.
