Once upon a rather sunny day in 1857, California, Fast track Fred, a visionary politician, gave birth to an idea. You see, he dreamed of a 'lamp of learning'. The lamp that brings enlightenment to everyone in the state, on the humble stage of Minns' Evening Normal School in San Francisco. This hardworking school, friends, is the seed that blossomed into what you now know as California State University (CSU).
Now, let me put you in the picture. When Minns' Evening Normal School saw its first dawn, it didn’t boast of majestic buildings, sprawling campuses, or a horde of scholars. But we had passion, yes sir, passion and one room. Yep, we started at the storefront with 7 students and a simple dream to educate everyone. No frills, just the basics.
Time scampered on like a hare, and came 1862, the government chipped in and baptized our baby, Minns’ Evening Normal School as California State Normal School. Fred's brainchild took the first baby step let’s say it metamorphosed like a caterpillar into a butterfly. No less than a miracle, eh!
With its wings spread wide, California State Normal School migrated south, making a pit stop at San Jose in 1871. The '70s were the time when our school was like a gawky teenager, still trying to figure out its place in the world. Bumbling, yet resilient. By 1899, about 600 students were calling it their academic home, their passport to a splendid future.
As the 20th century donned its hat, we became the first folks to offer a Bachelor's degree program in education for kindergarteners. Now, that will raise some eyebrows, won't it? By the early 20th century, Normal schools were booming, and our’s was no different, with a strong student count of 1,000.
But then, something magical happened in 1972. Beam me up, Scotty! Our humble school transformed into a whole University, The California State University. Can you believe it? That small, one-room school touched the skies of academics, offering multiple undergraduate and postgraduate programs. No less than a fairy Godmother's stardust, isn't it!
