Imagine this, on a bright day of March 3, 1899, a revolutionary idea was born in the mind of state representative Fred Cocke. He put forward a bill for a new educational institution, to be named Southwest Texas State Normal School. Now, why did he think of such an idea you may ask? He wanted to serve the dedicated folks from Hays and the surrounding counties where the proposed school was to be based. Though some opposed, help came from an ally in state senator J.B. Dibrell. And guess what? On May 10, 1899, the bill was signed into law by Governor Joseph D. Sayers! This new school's mission was brilliantly unique - to provide manual training and teach practical subjects like domestic sciences and agriculture.
The bells rang and doors opened to welcome 303 eager students to the first enrollment in the all-new brick and mortar structure, famously known as the Old Main, in September 1903. Not just studying, any student graduating from this school with a diploma and teaching certificate had the privilege to teach in the state’s public schools. What a fascinating start to a long journey, isn’t it?
Fast forward to 1912, the school began a partnership with the San Marcos School Board, empowering students of Southwest Texas State Normal School to instruct local school children, giving them a hands-on experience to be future educators. This formed a unique partnership with the local community. After 1963, the school welcomed its very first African-American students. And among them was Dana Smith, who fought a federal lawsuit to open the doors of the institution to a more diverse and inclusionary student body.
And then there was a day in history, etched in golden letters. November 8, 1965, when one of the school's most reputed alumnus, United States president Lyndon B. Johnson, returned to his beloved alma mater to sign an epoch-making document, the Higher Education Act of 1965. Sharing relatable anecdotes about his humble student days, Johnson made a speech in the old Strahan Gymnasium, which is now the Music Building.
Fast forward to a sombre day on November 13, 1969, the school made headlines when ten students were expelled from Texas State for protesting against the Vietnam war. They came to be known as “San Marcos 10.” Their courageous fight for their rights went all the way up to the U.S. Supreme Court. Despite their subsequent loss of credits, their struggle marked an unforgettable chapter in the college's history.
By 1926, the sprawling campus which started from just 11 acres in 1899 had housed 18 buildings around the original Main Building. Highlights included academic buildings, a library, dormitories, and grand gymnasiums. In the same year, nearby, excitement brewed with A. B. Rogers's acquisition of 90 acres of land next to the San Marcos River to create the Aquarena Springs theme park. Later, in 1994, the university purchased this land to use as a research and education center.
Turn the clock to 1996, the school began offering courses in Round Rock, Texas. It initially offered night classes enabling students to earn graduate degrees in business administration and education. With growing enrolments and a generous gift of 101 acres, Texas State University Round Rock Campus was built and opened in 2005.
The journey of this school was marked by periodic evolution instigated by the change in its name. The first of these occurred in 1918 when it transformed from Southwest Texas State Normal School to Southwest Texas State Normal College. It went through multiple rebranding, finally being named Texas State University at San Marcos in 2003.
Fast forward to the recent past in autumn 2019, a federal review was launched into Texas State University's compliance with a crime-reporting statute. The university admitted to under-reporting the number of rapes and other crimes on campus in recent years. This investigation brought under scanner the university's commitment to providing a safe and secure campus for its students.
So dear students, this was the story of the Texas State University- a journey from a normal school to a university marked with revolutionary ideas, challenges, changes, and continuous growth. A reminder that every story is a chapter in the vast book of history, and you, as a future member of this prestigious University, will be a part of shaping the continuing history ahead.
