This was the year when Joseph Sadoc Alemany, a Dominican Order member, assumed his new role as Bishop of Monterey. An interesting twist to the story? At the time of his appointment, he was attending a meeting of the Dominican Order in Italy. This order, which is a Roman Catholic religious group, was born from the devotion of Saint Dominic de Guzmán back in France, in 1216.
Now, here's where it gets more exciting. Despite his new responsibilities, Bishop Alemany had another dream. Before he dove into his new role in California, he made a pit stop in Paris. His stop wasn't just for sightseeing, but to visit the Dominican Monastery of the Cross. Here, he expressed a heartfelt desire – he longed for a handful of Dominican Sisters to join him in California, to educate the children of the Forty-niners.
Fueled by Bishop Alemany's request, one young, and brave individual responded. Belgian novice, Sister Mary of the Cross Goemaere, didn't miss a beat when she decided to join him on his journey. Her determination was to not only accompany the Bishop but also start a school in the new diocese. But she didn't march alone for long; within three years, she was joined by nine women. This diverse group, consisting of three Americans, a Mexican, and five Spanish individuals, banded together to form the Congregation of the Most Holy Name. And, in 1854, they relocated to Benicia, California.
The visionary leadership didn't stop at Sister Mary. Mother Louis O'Donnell, who served the congregation from 1887 to 1929, steered this new collective a step further. She moved the motherhouse, which was now a school and novitiate, from Benicia to San Rafael in 1889.
Next, we cannot overlook 1890, when the Congregation of the Most Holy Name, under Mother O'Donnell's guidance, took a significant stride. In that year, Mother O'Donnell and her team stepped forward with confidence and legal paperwork. They filed Articles of Incorporation with the Secretary of State of California!
Progress didn't stop there, and it became more remarkable. In 1915, something exciting stirred on the academic front. Encouraged by their peers at the University of California in Berkeley, a junior college was born. Then just two years later, in 1917, Dominican College was established. It's a significant milestone because it became the first Catholic college in California to grant the bachelor's degree to women.
And there's more! In 1971, Dominican College transformed again. It put aside its female-only roots and embraced coeducation. Thus, the era of the Dominican University of California, as we know it today, had begun.
