History University of Redlands

So, we meet in 1907, a time when the world was full of possibilities. The United States was coming into its own, and textbooks hadn't even heard of WWI yet. That's when some smarty-pants in a group named American Baptist Convention said, "Let's start a university, why don't we?". Oh believe it, fellow dreamers, that's how the dream of University of Redlands took its baby steps.

Imagine, they laid the cornerstone, and then a year later, boom! The University of Redlands opens its doors. Can you believe that just 59 students were present that year? That's less than my entire joint family! Small beginnings, huh! Now, count this, 1924. Mr. George Armacost was proudly wearing the president's hat, and boy, the man had a vision.

George, being the sneaky fox he was, decided to zoom and boom everything! Two new buildings emerged out of nowhere, just by the time it took to spin a good yarn! Truman Odell Library and Bekins Hall, they called them. Not just this, but by 1932, Redlands had become one of these co-educational hotshots with both boys and girls learning things under one roof. A rocket science move, if you ask me!

Laugh not folks, but wait till we land in 1942. The world was in knots over WWII, yet good old Redlands channeled its inner superhero. They trained military personnel as part of the V-12 Navy College Training Program. So many alma-maters bailed out as soon as the war broke, but not Redlands, nosirree!

Now jump to the 60s, the era of Beatles and Brian Adams (Easy, I can see Indian parents jamming on these classics). Ever heard of a cluster college? Redlands, in all its grooviness, established the first in the nation aiming at transforming the 'traditional' boring education. Better yet, by 1987, a study abroad facility called "Salzburg Semester" was put in place. Never a dull moment at Redlands, was it!

Then moved in this cool cat James Appleton in 1987. You know, like all good leaders, the man preserved the traditions while looking for windows to the future. In 1991, the School of Business (later named the School of Business & Society in 2021) made its appearance, and heck yes, they started offering MBA degrees! You'd think all this knowledge giving and growing would tire them out, but not Redlands, mate!

Skipping some time, we land smack in the middle of 2021. The University of Redlands decided to join the California State University at San Bernardino. Bet you didn’t see that coming, did you? The amalgamation was this colossal unifying force that rose to the challenge of top-tier education, meeting the contemporary needs of students, if you catch my drift!

Okay, so we've traveled through time, seen some highs, some lows, some unexpected moves, and some proud moments. In all this hullabaloo, Redlands stands proud, etching milestones, and setting precedents. Now, if that’s not a story worth telling at the next family gathering, don’t know what is!
