Can you imagine a humble Bible Missionary Institute evolving into a nationally acclaimed liberal arts college? This transformative journey started in 1937, under the inspired vision of Ruth Kerr, the dynamic CEO of the Kerr Glass Manufacturing Company. The institute was housed on the erstwhile campus of the Westlake School for Girls, nestled in the heart of bustling Downtown Los Angeles. Just two short years later, the institute got its first identity makeover and was christened the Western Bible College.
The collective resolve of Ruth Kerr and the other founding team members saw the institution embark on a liberal arts curriculum, a groundbreaking decision that painted the canvas for the college's future. In 1940, Dr. Wallace Emerson, the college's first president, further reshaped its identity. The institute was renamed Westmont College, symbolising a college situated in the west, cradled by mountains. Dr. Emerson dreamed of transforming Westmont into a top-tier Christian liberal arts college.
Fast forward to 1944, and Westmont College had outgrown its facilities nestled in the heart of Los Angeles. A search for a larger campus went underway and it was an intriguing search indeed, fraught with failed attempts and desperate measures. Finally, in 1945, Mrs. Kerr and the trustees happened upon 'El Tejado', an expansive 125-acre estate previously owned by Dwight Murphy in Montecito. Thus, Westmont found its forever home in the enchanting Santa Barbara area.
Embedded in the breathtaking foothills of the Santa Ynez Mountains, the college's scenic acres became an idyllic backdrop for a residential institution. The campus was a mix of architectural delights, encompassing buildings and landscapes from two former estates, and the historic Deane School for Boys. It captured the spirit of the scenic suburb of Montecito, Santa Barbara, complete with the garden atmosphere, stone bridges and rustic pathways.
Amidst this natural beauty, Westmont has progressively built and developed state-of-art facilities including the Voskuyl Library, the rejuvenated Westmont Art Center, the A. Nelson Science Building, the Murchison Gymnasium Complex, and the Ruth Kerr Memorial Student Center. The college further upped its facilities ante when it broke ground for two more centres for academia in 2008 - the Winter Hall for Science and Mathematics, and the Adams Center for the Visual Arts.
A twist in Westmont's narrative came in 2006 when an anonymous benefactor pledged a whopping $75 million, one of the largest donations to a liberal arts college at the time. However, the narrative took a harsh turn when the donor retracted the generous pledge in 2009.
The college, situated in a high fire risk area, has experienced its share of trials. Ravaged by fires multiple times in 1964, 1977, and 2008, the campus despite these calamities has always formed the backdrop for firefighting efforts.
Westmont’s unbeatable spirit was evident when in 1964, the Coyote Fire razed 75,000 acres and destroyed Catherwood Hall, a men’s dorm. In 1977, the Sycamore Canyon Fire led to damage to Westmont‘s athletic field and property. However, the true test took place in 2008, when the Tea Fire swallowed structures on campus, including the Physics Lab, Psychology Building, and Math Building. But, Westmont dragged itself out from the ashes becoming a symbol of resilience for many.
Further-human trials lay ahead with the relentless Thomas Fire causing the evacuation of the Westmont campus in December 2017. However, the indomitable spirit of the college saw it bounce back right on schedule for the spring semester on January 8, 2018. But nature had other plans, and the repeated threat of wildfires and mudslides led to a record five evacuations for the academic year 2017-2018. Through all these disasters, Westmont stood tall absorbing the punches and thriving despite multiple adversities. This narrative encapsulates the fascinating history that makes Westmont College an epitome of perseverance and resilience.
So dear students and parents, if you are looking for an institution that has stood tall against monumental challenges, that has proven its mettle academically and holistically, then look no further. Westmont College, with its rich historical tapestry, academic prowess and sheer perseverance, is the place to be. If adversity is the best teacher, then Westmont is indeed a master in imparting lessons about resilience and spirit.
As Indian parents, who prioritize our children's education and experiences, Westmont's journey rings true - dedication, perseverance, and hard work can lead to success. And young aspirants, let's not forget, there isn't a mountain high enough for a driven soul.
