History California Institute of the Arts

Let's take a trip back in time to 1961 when the story of the California Institute of the Arts, fondly known as CalArts, started. With the famed Chouinard Art Institute and the Los Angeles Conservatory of Music facing financial difficulties, a merger seemed the most viable solution. Nelbert Chouinard, the founder of the Art Institute, was terminally ill, and his long-time friend Walt Disney couldn't let these educational diamonds lose their shine.

Disney, along with his brother Roy O. Disney, Chouinard, Lulu May Von Hagen, and Thornton Ladd, embarked on the journey to merge and expand the two institutions. Their vision? To make CalArts a "Disneyland" of sorts, a school that feeds the numerous blooming art industries. Leading this vision was Robert W. Corrigan, appointed as the first president of the institute.

Not everything was a walk in the park, though. In March 1971, CalArts met with unexpected difficulties. Torrential rains, labor shortages, and the Sylmar Earthquake made the construction of the new campus a relentless challenge. But like a phoenix, CalArts rose from the ashes, launching its first campus at the former Villa Cabrini Academy in July 1970.

The reins of the educational powerhouse soon landed in the hands of Corrigan, the founding dean of the School of Arts at New York University. He imagined CalArts through a new lens and to bring this vision to life; he enlisted the help of fellow academic Herbert Blau. Together they assembled an elite team of educators who left an indelible mark on the institute, shaping it into the globally recognized educational stronghold it is today.

However, the road to success wasn't free of bumps. Between 1972 and 1975, financial instability rocked the establishment. But Lund's operational cuts, layoffs, and the short-term pausing of several degree programs steered CalArts back to stability. By the time 1975 rolled in, under the presidency of Robert J. Fitzpatrick, it was ready to grow and expand its horizons.

During Fitzpatrick's tenure, the institute grew exponentially. The roster now included globally recognized programs such as Character Animation and Jazz. In 1984, Fitzpatrick, while still president of CalArts, served as the director of the 1984 Olympic Arts Festival, which further enhanced the institute's reputation.

Fast forward to the late '80s, Steven D. Lavine took the mantle as the new president. Under his stewardship, growth bloomed, and the Roy & Edna Disney CalArts Theatre was added to the institute. But, in 1994, CalArts was ravaged by the Northridge Earthquake. With the main institute building suffering critical damage, classes were held in tents scattered miles apart around Los Angeles County.

Enter professional musician and CalArts admirer Herb Alpert in 1994. In a bid to extend support, he established the Alpert Awards in the Arts in collaboration with CalArts and the Herb Alpert Foundation. His continued support led to the School of Music being renamed in his honor in 2008.

In 2017, after serving for 29 years as the president, Levine passed the torch to Ravi S. Rajan, the then-dean of the School of the Arts at the State University of New York at Purchase. Under Rajan’s stewardship, CalArts has been continuously pioneering experimental inter-disciplinary laboratories. Platforms like Center for Experiments in Art, Information, and Technology, Center for Integrated Media, Center for New Performance at CalArts, and the Cotsen Center for Puppetry and the Arts bear testament to that pioneering spirit, keeping the legacy of the institute's founders alive in the present day.
