Our tale begins way back when, in 1696. We're talking about the time when St. John's College was just a twinkle in the eyes of its founders. Back then, King William III felt it would be downright splendid if Maryland had its own institute of higher learning, and so, he granted a charter to establish King William's School in Annapolis.
Shifting gears to 1784 ( yes, an astonishing 88-years leap), the Maryland legislature (those are the chaps who make the rules there) felt a big old change was in order. So, they transformed King William's School into St. John's College. And thus, a new era began.
The next big leap came in 1964, when the college, in all its wisdom, started admitting women. Can you believe there was a time women couldn't attend the university? Talk about being stuck in the stone age, eh? But it's not like St. John's was alone in this; pretty much every institute was the same before the whirlwind of change swept across them.
In 1967, the college spread its wings and built another campus. This time to the south-west, in the city of Santa Fe, New Mexico. It's a bit of a hop, skip, jump away from Annapolis, but it's lovely out there, I tell ya. Two campuses, one college, St. John’s was growing broad and wide.
As it happened, this move turned out to be a pretty savvy one. Today, St. John's College is a top-ranked liberal arts college that boasts of its unique curriculum (not, like, just chapters out of a thick old boring textbook, but learning created specially for bright young minds like yours).
Now, this might make you chuckle, but St. John's has no majors. No, really. Instead, every student follows what's known as a 'Great Books' program. Sounds impressive, right? It's all about making students dive deep into Western canon, whatever that means!
And it's not just academics either. The college is known for its annual 'Annapolis Cup'. Not 'cup' as in the trophy, but 'cup' as in a crazy game of croquet. Yes, you heard it right, croquet! Now that's something to tell your folks back home.
Today, St. John's is a diverse learning space where students from various backgrounds (including fantastic folks from India, of course) converge to get the best out of their remarkable curriculums. Just imagine, from a small school in Maryland, the historic journey of St. John's to becoming a prestigious college is nothing short of spectacular!
So that's St. John’s in a nutshell. A journey nearly as long and winding as the Ganges. From a small school to a renowned higher education institute, St. John's has come a long way. We sure hope this colourful trip down memory lane has got you thinking – who knows, your story could be the next chapter in St. John's grand old history!
