History New College of Florida

The story of the New College of Florida begins in 1960, when the institution was established as a private college for academically gifted students. The initial seed money was gifted by the United Church of Christ, and the college's maiden voyage was spearheaded by its first president, George F. Baughman, who served between 1961 to 1965. This visionary institution unlocked its doors to its first batch of 101 students in 1964, welcoming students from every race, religion, and gender to obtain an education that valued free inquiry. The faculty ranks boasted of erudite scholars like the historian and philosopher Arnold J. Toynbee.

New College marked itself out as unique through an academic program that placed the onus of the education on the individual students. By the time 1972 rolled around, the student body had burgeoned to over 500. Sadly, as the new decade came in, the college found itself grappling with the oppressive weight of inflation that started compromising its economic sustainability. By 1975, the college was mired in a $3.9 million debt and teetering on the edge of bankruptcy. It was then that the University of South Florida (USF) threw the college a lifeline by taking over the land and facilities to set up a branch.

The next few years saw New College becoming part of the USF under the banner of an 'upper division campus'. Eventually, in 2001, it was time for another significant transformation. The New College board of trustees took a bold step by trading their campus and other assets, then valued at $8.5 million, with the state. In return, the state paid off the college's debts and promised to continue to operate the school as a separate arm within the USF system. The college was renamed as the 'New College of the University of South Florida'.

Embellishing this era of the college's life was an uneasy alliance between the New College and the University of South Florida and its Sarasota branch program. Their shared occupancy of the bayfront campus lasted just around 2001. This year marked a significant watershed in Florida's public education system. The New College snapped the cord with USF, emerged as the eleventh independent school of the State University System of Florida, and was officially christened the New College of Florida.

The school's innovatively open academic system was ensconced into the state statute, permitting students to customize their educational experience according to their personal interests and abilities. As another stride for autonomy, the University of South Florida was instructed to move away from the New College campus in 2006. However, they continued the shared use of some facilities such as the library.

Fast forward to 2022, the New College earned the distinction of having the highest percentage of Fulbright scholars of any college or university in the United States. By early 2023, Governor Ron DeSantis ushered in a new chapter for the college by instituting a fresh board of trustees, led by noted conservative activists. This dramatic turn of events even included the replacement of the then-college president Patricia Okker.

The college's mutation also evolved into a clampdown on diversity and inclusion initiatives and extensive changes to faculty and curriculum. This era, however, was not without controversy. Faculty outrage ignited after the board of trustees denied tenure to five professors who were seeking tenure after completing five years, rather than the customary six years.

By July 2023, a startling one-third of the faculty had opted to leave the college, reacting to the conservative tide. Some of these breakaway academicians attempted to establish an alternative institution, which was thwarted by a lawsuit by the New College of Florida. Despite the tumultuous times, the college continued on its way, with new president Richard Corcoran's hefty annual remuneration of over $1 million making headlines in October 2023.

In the following month, New College requested a state grant of $400 million to metamorphose the school, signaling the dawn of another chapter in the colorful journey that is New College of Florida. Let's set out on an adventure to explore the intriguing world of studying abroad in this captivating educational institution.
